Go with what you like paladins and rangers can be fun but if you like useing magic try a mage or a scorceror(pretty powerfull)or a wild mage(fun fun fun)then if you like being a fighting machine try a barbarian(ive heard good things)or a kensai(got to love if you duel class him at a good lvl)basically you should go with what you love if you like being a paladin then check out the kits and try one if your more of a mage type then check out them.

    ~Edit~
I almost forgot about Monk.....if you like power this is one of the most overpowered in the game.

Well, if you are starting at the basic SOA level, then some classes may put you off on first appearance. Particularly bards, thieves and monks are rather frail at that level, this may put of off, but i have found these classes are the ones who gain the best abilities at higher levels

If you dont want a hack and slash game, then go for something apart from a fighter, as mentioned above, wild mages are indeed fun, though i have yet to see the cow falling spell effect :D

sorcerers can become ludicrously powerful later on, the potential to cast time stop 6 times is not to be laughed at

thieves can be interesting, the stalking through the streets can be cool

For your very first time, don't try anyting overtly complicated, like a monk, sorceror, etc. I recommend doing a John Doe fighter just to get the feel of the game at first.

And someone needs to take out some ToB stuff here.

Paladin is a great class for newbies, as you'll have acess to the best sword in the game, and you'll have a few spellcasting abilities...

Ranger is also a good class for newbies. Try something straightforward and get used to the game, then try something more exotic. You can always dual to something else later.

If a single base class is not too you're liking, maybe multi-class will do the trick. I am currently playing a Fighter/Thief (halfling). Excellent character. You can wear any armor when combat gets nasty, then switch to something lighter when you need to scout, etc.

When I first heared about a Ranger/Cleric, I just had to try it. I still don't regret it.

It was mentioned earlier - but play a Wild Mage.
It is by far the most fun class, simple one on one with a goblin and **POOF** the first spell turned me yellow for three days.
    Couldn't help but laugh...

Yes and sadly I'm the one that brought me to mention wild mages and for that I...would apologize if I could spell the word....try a scorceror since we talk of mages so much.Oh and if you do try a scorceror download something off of SP that suggjests spell picks.Reason:picking a spell like find firmiliar would be bad because you don't exactly cast that a whole lot.
