[IMG] Rakanishu is funny, especially the way those punies say it in a high pitched voice.

This name originated back when Ultima Online first came out and was my main character there on the Atlantic Shard for the 9 months or so I played UO. As the months drew on, I'd have to say the last 2 months of playing it, things were only getting worse with each day. My own fun had vanished, I had explored every part of the world and summer was just around the corner.

I opened my doors to my forge for the public, had a friend within the game cast gate and said this once "Free items. Come quickly" and two people came through. They looted all my chests, boxes, everything in my house was all theirs for the taking. I logged off in a chair by my own forge and that was it. Never went back.

I continue to use it on any RPG board because of its history.

<sniff> How sad, yet poetic... nice!

For me "Blackthorne The Abominable" came about through game playing as well. My first RPG was Wizardry, and I chose names like Blackthorne and Ironfist, and Blackthorne became my favorite. I kept it even though I found in one of the Ultimas (5 I think?) that Blackthorne was the bad guy. Then came a game called "So you want to be a hero?" (later named Hero's Quest I) which was more of an adventure game, but which provided a large number of characters for your name, so out of curiosity and amusement, I tacked on "The Abominable" just to see what would happen. Well, the game actually inserted the whole thing into dialog when talking to me, and it's been a mild source of amusement ever since...

I made my name up, figuring it was a good name for an elven fighter.

[IMG] I'm new to this board, so I will apologise if I'm intruding at all...I always use 'Hope' as my name, and I'm playing as a cavalier. It is a good name to go by when one is a member of the most noble order of the radiant heart :p, and I wanted to leave Irenicus 'Hope'less.
I Hope you will enjoy my company furthur ;)

    remember-where there's life there's Hope x

Belisarius - Was the name of the first D & D character I ever played ( A Paladin). I always thought it was a cool name for a Paladin!

Belisarius was also the name of one of my favorite generals in history. He was the general of Emperor Justinian's Eastern Empire. He almost completely restored the boundaries of the old Roman Empire.

I'm surprised u know history that far back. I know of the Byzantine's Great Roman General Belsarius. He was said to be the greatest General up to that point in history to ever live.

    Good Name.

Well, so far as I know I came up with Jsil as a name, though I may possibly have borrowed it from somewhere. I did a lot of building for MUDs and DM'ing about 5-10 years ago, and along the way I realised that coming up with names for People/Places would be much easier if I developed a small little language to occasionally draw upon.

Jsil (pronounced Ees-ill) is formed by:

The first son of a noble house always has a name beginning with J, the second letter of which is a consonant, the J being pronounced an "e". So, you could have Jgar, or Jnivinea. (This was only for a particular community of elves in my DM'ing world). The second part of the name is chosen from the elven tongue and is meant to bring good fortune (i.e. commonly these would translate to grace, honour, power, etc).

Sil means "Fear" in the elven tongue I developed -- of which there were only maybe 30 words.

So, Jsil = "The first son: fear", which is a bit aberrant as normally you'd see Jfenil or such, "The first son: courage". The naming convention derives from a pact with the gods, under which all firstborn sons were offered up to them (kinda like baptism).

Anyway, Jsil would normally have the last name of his father, with a diminutive to indicate that he's not the head of the family. However, because he's rapeget, his last name is actually Khalis'an, gifted to him by the members of his community (he's a half-elf).

Khalis means blood, and all nouns are dealt with in this language by prefixing & suffixing. Khalis'an means "come of blood"
-- His mother died in the birthing. The fact that it is a suffix denotes the "of", and "'an" means "come"

So, Jsil Khalis'an means, in a sensible translation: The first son, blessed with fear and come of blood.

A suitable name for the child of Bhaal, I think. =)

    Extra:

Khalis'az, by the way, would mean "Place of blood", and would be a name for a battlefield where many died. Likewise, Fenil'az means "Place of courage" and would be a name for a battlefield where your side won. =)

    Zir'Khalis'az'i: The Blooded(az'i -- literally: the city of blood-in-the-past) City(Zir).

    etc...

[IMG] Hmm how did Sorcerer came to be...

I remember back when I was starting to build Sorcerer's Place, I was looking for a fitting name for it. It had to be something a bit fantasy-like, but not too cliche.
So eventually the Wizard's Tower and the like were discarded, and I was left with an alternative to the wizard - sorcerer.
Now tower would be another cliche, and since I wanted something a bit more modern I said, crib. Er, Place... ;)

So there you go, if I stuck with the original idea Sorcerer's Place would've been Wizard's Tower today. Neat eh?
Of curse, since I'm running the show, I'm the proverbial Sorcerer then.

As for Taluntain... When I made these boards I wanted to use something else for my nick since Sorcerer is more of a description than a name. So I chose Taluntain. I was browsing some poorly designed site one day and I came upon a section called Elven Fantasy Names. I think they were all made up, but some had descriptions besides them.

The list was huge, there were over 1000 names on the list. Almost at the end of the page, one caught my eye.
Taluntain, and beside it, the description : Enlightened.
Taluntain=Enlightened. I liked it, so here I am. The sorcerous legacy is still with me though... I left Sorcerer as my rank here on the boards.
