Does anyone know how to change the resolution to 640x480? I've tried modifying the config file but the game keeps changing back to 800x600 when it starts.

That's probably the minimum, I doubt anything supports 640x480 at this point. LCD monitors don't even go below 800x600 any more.

They do, but you'll either get a very tiny image in the center of the monitor or a horribly pixellated image expanded onto the full screen :D

Well, my two LCDs (19" and 22") don't go below 800x600 via Display Properties...

That's Windows, not the monitors themselves. I think 800x600 has been the minimum resolution since XP, but definitely the case in Vista and 7. Other OSes will go lower and if you run any application that uses a full-screen resolution of 320x200 (DOSBox for example) or 640x480 the resolutions will work fine.

My guess is that DAO has a similar "no lower than 800x600" limitation so it's probably not possible to force a lower resolution.

Thank you for the info, I'll just have to find other methods of improving the performance.

I recall reading something about someone running it in 640x480 resolution in windowed mode. I have no idea if it requires any tweaks though. However 640x480 in windowed mode is almost certainly slower than 800x600 in full screen. So that probably will not help with any performance problems. If 800x600 is not playable then you should really think about upgrading your computer.
