A modern campaign

Has anyone played DnD in modern times here? Of course, it doesn't leave plenty to the imagination, but it seems interesting anyways.

 

No, but I'd be interested in making one. A modern campaign, that is.

There are plenty of RPG's out there dedicated to different time era's. Perhaps instead of trying to bring D&D into the modern era, you could play one of these alternate games that already does this...or even the future aka Star Wars roleplaying game, or Wheel of Time. D&D is best left in the fantasy realm that it comes from. These other game types are designed to deal with the modern type weapons in a fair and balanced way...D&D does not rellly have a way to adjucate the modern weapons (The Arquebus is the one exception, but it is hardly "modern").

 

Do you mean sword & sorcery in a modern era? In other words, magic with guns? That's a hard balance to obtain, and like Baldak says, you couldn't bring the D&D rules over to a modern era - they just aren't designed for that. With all the D20 games out there now, I'm sure you could find something you like. Or, you could design one if you want, using the D20 system.

 

In the last Dungeon magazine there's been a section about the pseudo-modern campaign setting. I have to say that it doesn't look all that bad, although it would be very hard to play such games focusing on battle, with the firearms dealing a lot of damage, and characters having little HP (All standard classes there are based on Hit Die of 4, raising that with prestige classes), but in general, the system looked interesting.
