A question about grenade

Playing WW2 shooter, i saw that German grenades looks like pineapple on a handle. With a handle, i would think that it is easier to throw, but why modern grenades all look like durians ?

 

'Eggs' have a couple of advantages: Less weight, more compact, sufficient destructive power, somewhat cheaper and easier to manufacture, consume less material.

I read that the long wooden handle extended the throwing range by fifty percent. That is an advantage for sappers and shock troops, especially in trench fighting.
With weapons like 40mm grenade launchers and other fire support prevalent in modern western armies there is less of a need for that, and it is independent of the soldiers physical abilities or throwing skills.

Grenades today are mainly used at relatively short ranges and close quarters, in house and trench fighting. That doesn't mean 'potato mashers' would be ineffective today. They were quite practical and effective.

 

Pineapple grenades (your durian) are not all that heavy -- and easy to throw for any who ever played baseball (or cricket for that matter). Although the potato smashers were quite effective; I believe pineapple grenades could be thrown farther, were easier to throw, and were more accurate (at least for the American troops). Without a handle, they could be used more effectively in tight spaces.

 

One advantage of the potato masher was that it could be easily converted into a 'geballte Ladung' by applying usually 6 additional explosive heads to one stick, which was frequently done.
