A very unrealistic thing in the game: proficiency!

I read the topic "Profiencies", I did a little bit of thinkin' and I found out that something is really unrealistic:

I have a "worlds greatest swordman" in my party with 5 profiency slot's on long sword, so he's grandmaster. But when you give him a Bastard Sword, he's a very bad fighter for he doesn't hit anything. The Bastard Sword and the Long Sword are almost the same (small differences) so when I'd be realistic, he should also be good with the bastard sword, not as good as with the Long Sword, but he really can use it well, for there's just a small difference with the Long Sword, and so it is with more weapons in the game.

Shouldn't there be a system that when you have 5 profiency-slots on Long Sword, you can use a Bastard Sword like you have 3 prof. slots on it? (for example)

Maybe it's a little bit against all the AD&D rules but maybe this is something for AD&D 4th edtion.

    What do you think?

[IMG] Well isnt it a bit unrealistic that you can become a grandmaster of a weapon all by your self? I like planescape:torment where you had to find a trainer to use your proficiency points.Bastard swords are alot heavier then long swords so while your a grandmaster with long swords your timing and balance would be messed up(I know I mess around in the house of cutlery :))

"Bastard swords are a lot heavier then long swords so while your a grandmaster with long swords your timing and balance would be messed up" That's a good point... :) And possibly the reason

Well indeed there are differences between the weapons but that shouldn't make you very bad without a profiency-slot on a weapon that is a little different....

When you always drive car, you are also able to drive a bus???? Of course it's difference but not almost impossible???

but theres a differnce in weight, legnth and stregnth, in real life if you spent ur entire life learning to use a katana, because of its unique design if you picked up a midevil aged sword, you might not suck with it, but it sure would be clumsey in your hands, until you got use to it...

Hmm maybe you're right however, some weapons in the game aren't really very different....

But now in BG2 I already got too much prof.slots and I don't know where to put them on so maybe in the expansion or NWN there are more options for the slots...

WHat I thought about is make also in slots a difference between piercing weaopns, arrow-weapons, slashing weapons, blunt weapons etc. were you can put a slot on that gives profiency on all weaopns in that group and then you can specialize also in a group of weapons, so you can have a prof.slot on blunt weapons AND also put 2 prof.slots on war-hammer or mace.

Just an idea, I'm at work and bored and then these thing come up :)

By the way, actual second edition rules give reduced non-proficiency penalties for related weapons. And certain books allow for spending points to get all the weapons in a certain category. But, specialization means the concentration on a particular weapon, so your studies of other weapons will tend to suffer.

A better point would be that AD&D is not intended to be realistic. If it was, you'd be crippled after you first encounter with orcs, and get to roleplay a bitter person growing old as a cripple. After all, anyone who gets hit with a sword ten times should die, no matter how "experienced" he is. All your party members would have to carry rings of regeneration to avoid this fate. In RPGs, the last thing you want is realism

Amen Brother AMaster. It's a fantasy "game" not a mirror of life.
