Who is he, you ask yourself.

Abdul Rahman is a citizen of Kabul in Afghanistan. He is estimated to be 40 years old. Until recently he was, as you would expect, a Muslim. However, he has converted to Christianity. And this caused a bit of a kerfuffle in downtown Kabul. So much so, poor old Abdul has been sentenanced to death for apostasy. Yes, you read that right. A court in Kabul has sentanced the man to death by hanging.

This is despite the new Aghan constitution recognising both freedom of religion and the Hanafi school of sharia law. Even so, Rahman will hang.

Of course there is international outrage. Hamid Karzai, Afghan PM is trying to intervene. However, popular opinion is very much in favour of hanging poor old Abdul.

    Here are some quotes

"The courts should punish him and he should be put to death," - Abdul Zahid Payman.

"According to Islamic law he should be sentenced to death because God has clearly stated that Christianity is forbidden in our land". - Mohammed Qadir

"there is no way we are going to allow an Afghan to insult us by becoming Christian." - a neighbour of Rahman

"he will have to be executed... If somebody at one point affirms the truth [belief in God] and then rejects it or denies it, it would jeopardize the whole paradigm of truth. This is such a big offense that the penalty can only be death. At the very most, some scholars argue that the person should be given time to rethink, and if he embraces Islam again, he will be forgiven." - this from a Muslim intellectual Shahnawaz Farooqui.

"Afghanistan does not have any obligation under international laws. The prophet says, when somebody changes religion, he must be killed." - Maulavi Habibullah - a muslim cleric addressing a crowd in Kabul.

It seems that unless Hamid Karzai pulls a rabbit from the hat, Rahman's only defence is going to be one of insanity!!

Nice to see that War in Afghanistan we don't read about anymore has produced such marvellous results!

It's wonderful to see how, historically, Islam has regressed as an enlightened culture. Once upon a time, they allowed Christians and Jews to live amongst Muslims, unpersecuted, completely opposite of their Chirstian neighbors to the north.

Once they lead the world in advancements in math and build great and advanced societies in Africa that extended beyond their European contemporaries in science.

I suppose all religions go through this state at one point or another, but it's rather disgusting to see people so willing to kill another over differing views on the same damn god. God knows why Judeo-Christian Islamic tradition has such a fix on killing each other.
