Right now I'm doing my first runthrough with a party of three as opposed to a party of six, since I don't think I could stand the silence in my party if I soloed... I've always wanted to dual class Imoen into a mage, but I'm not sure if I really should.

    Current party is-
Rixia - level 4, elven thief
Imoen - level 4, human thief
Xan - level 3, elven mage (enchanter)

I have yet to go to the bandit camp.

Seems to me like it might be useful to have a non-specialist mage around. Fireball is always fun, as is magic missile, and I think it might help me since I've been having a lot of trouble killing mages ever since I got SCS (Sword Coast Stratagems, I'd highly recommend this mod to anybody playing Tutu).

My party is extremely low on melee power as it is, though. (Zero tanks.) I'm trying to learn how to use thieves effectively. At first taking two thieves seemed like the logical choice- Imoen does traps and locks, Rixia backstabs when she can.

I've always wanted to dual-class Imoen for consistency purposes, it's strange in BG2 when she's dual-classed and I never did that in BG1, etc...

I'd appreciate advice- should I dual class her at level 5? Level 6? Will my party be too weak until she gains back her thief skills for me to kill anything? (This is a party that had a ton of difficulty killing Bassilus and managed to defeat Mulahey almost entirely through sheer dumb luck. Not very strong, but fun to play.)

Remember, if you dual Imoen, you lose her thief skills until her mage class is one level higher than her thief class. Waiting until level 6 to dual her means you need to get to level 7 mage before you regain her thief skills, which is going to be a whole world of pain. On the flip-side of that, once your party gets into Baldur's Gate itself, there's not too many places you need to find/disarm traps (find traps spell) and if you can't force a lock, keep a knock spell memorised. In Baldur's Gate, there's loads of fairly simple 'fetch me this' type quests which should help boost Imoen back up once she's dualled.

Your party won't be too weak during the dualing period, Imoen is only one of your party members and won't be useless as low level mage.
Thanks to XP for scroll scribing she will gain mage levels quite fast, you might even want to delay scribing scrolls for Xan until the dualing period starts.

Level 5,6,7 are all playable, the earlier you dual the faster you'll get your fireball and her thieving skills back, the later you dual the more skill points Imoen will have.

What thiefy skills are you relying on Imoen to use? Since you already have a thief, dual her now or at level 5 whichever is closer.
