Yes, my friend, you ARE a jerk for making jokes about this story. And I mean that in the sense that you are a jerk for making fun of it before i had a chance to!
I realize that it is black humor to mock a senseless death, but it is pretty funny nonetheless. On a serious note, the guy who fired the shotgun obviously has some serious mental issues -- I hope they catch him and kill him so he can fix up those issues in the next life.

Whoa! You throw with tomatoes and you get bullets in return? What would you get with Halloween for your pumpkins? Mortirs?

The Amish have paintball guns nowadays, what kind of logic is that? People who don't believe in violence use paintball guns? Maybe the guy had a reason for shooting at them, if they were firing at him with paintball guns, those things can be dangerous.

This story reminds me of a family I knew growing up. They were a good Mormon family (and the irony here is that a few months ago, some people got Mormons confused with Amish) but anyhow, they decided that they would not allow toy guns in or around the house. Please note, this is not Mormon philosophy, but simply their version of keeping the home a sacred, protected place.

With me? Good. They had a boy about my age, and he was the WORST little bastard ever to come down the pike. He ended up getting arrested 4 years ago for -- you guessed it -- possession of a prohibited firearm (a Saturday Night Special, IIRC). So much for a no gun upbringing solving all society's problems.

I thought of this when I re-read the article and saw that the AMISH were using paintball guns! As was mentioned earlier, too bloody funny.

Hah. They got exactly what they deserved. Throwing tomatoes not to mention firing paintballs at a moving car may not be too cheap for the owner of the car. This is a model example of how stupid people are. You say "enough, do it again and I'll hit you in the face", and what do they do? They do it again. If the guy actually drove past the field so many times after warning them, taking new hits from thrown tomatoes and shot paintballs, giving the time for the idiots show some semblance of intelligence and stop it, before doing what he did, then they really had it coming.

Of course, what makes things completely different is the fact that in that Amish society it was a completely normal thing to do, throwing tomatoes etc. The way I see it is that if they put up warning signs a few days before that day of annual tomatoparty comes, then it would be the visitor's job to make sure he stayed out of their way if he wanted no part of the pranks. But if there was no warning, then doing such pranks is obviously criminal activity. And as I've said before, I have little mercy for criminals.

A humouristic event nonetheless. And certainly teaching. Maybe next time these people do something stupid and someone tells them he'll shoot them if they don't stop, they'll stop. This is almost deserving of a Darwinaward.

Foradasthar, You are kidding, right? That's what the bracketing Cynicism quotes is, right? I mean, thrown Tomatoes merits shot bullets?

Mennonites are pacifists too so a paintball gun is still a weirdly inappropriate thing for him to have had.

I would shoot/knife anybody that threw tomatoes at me.

Little fool got what he deserved. Too bad the rest of his posse did not.

I think it best not to trick-or-treat in Shura's neighborhood this year. what about throwing those little ketchup packets, is that the same as throwing tomatoes?

If shooting someone is appropriate retaliation for an annual prank, I really have to wonder what kind of retaliation would be appropriate if those people did something a bit more drastic.

Wait, so I am to believe that no one here has ever done anything they were told not to? So a simple prank deserves some kid getting shot with a shotgun? If so, every April Fool's day I should carry a shotgun.

I don't think there is a single person in the forums who would contest the fact that the shorgun was overkill. We also have to consider that damage to another person's property is wrong no matter what the reason is.

Yes, but does it still deserve some kid getting killed?
