    No, no, I did not mean it that way. It might be that here the word "janissary" has another meaning as well - as a convert or apostate who then oppresses his own former people.

    Look at it this way. The Janissaries, at least at first, were recruited from among the "unbelievers" - young boys were taken from their families and trained as the sultan's elite troops. They were considered to be very ruthless and brutal, including against the communities they had once been a part of. This was considered to be one of the worst taxes the Ottoman empire levied. The word has a connotation going far beyond simply a member of a military unit of this or that country.

    I have never heard it used in that way - but I'll take your word for it.

    You see, I am not as familiar with the history of the Turkish Janissaries as you are. I knew that they were trained from a very young age and removed from their families - which would definitely suck - but I was under the (apparently false) impression that it was considered an honor to be selected as a janissary.

    Come to think of it, this reminds me of Mussolini. That is, Evil M was a Socialist before he was a Fascist and decided he hated Socialists.

    Of course, the Jonah Goldbergs of the world think the fact that he was a Socialist once means he was a Socialist always. Because the fact that he, while he was a Socialist, said he would always be a Socialist is, like, the most important fact about him. Similarly, the fact that my parents once promised to spend the rest of their lives together means they're not actually divorced.

    Anyway, I wonder how long it'll be until someone in the region who doesn't like him decides that, well, he's still a dirty Jew.
