[IMG] Depending on party setup or degree of difficulty, any place can give you trouble. I came up with variation that might help you with the Mind Flayers in Underdark.

My party was wounded and had no potions of health. I needed a very safe solution.

My druid casted Storm Shield and shifted into a winter wolf. Yes, you say, that is very powerful, Mr. BGP. What did you do then? Go chew on the legs of the big table that holds up the big brain?

Wizard casted haste on the wolf and off she went, dashing towards through the maze. A little acid damage, lightning zapping around and harming enemies.

When you enter the center room, conversation begins. War is declared. Druid runs back to the party, who is standing at the only exit in the first room.

When the druid makes it back to the party, casting begins. In the first corner of the hallway leading from the first room, I put every nasty hovering area effect spell I had. Pick your own favorites; just be sure to include spells with a mixture of saves--not all spells that are focused on fortitude saves, for instance. I armed distance weapons and summoned an undead or two. (They take care of the occasional surprise Duegar that sneaks through.)

This was successful at my goal--no damage except for 20 points or so on the druid--except my wizard was dominated (but just stood there? She could have slaughtered the party with one fireball). But I dispelled that and the fight was over except sending the undead in to kill the brain.

    Addendum:

You might try to kill the mind golems using a decoy strategy--that was easy and very high XP. Why don't they huff and puff their gas when attacking you?

The party in the rear of the area was handled with a similar strategy, except I set up moon and fire walls and shot arrows at them to make them walk through them and thorns.

Sounds like a nice strategy. I just battled it through, very tough battle though.

[IMG] I used specops tactics for that citadel. My thief disabled lightning generators and my monk stunned that four mind flayer and beat them to death. (They really died; while stunned, they were unable to planeshift. :) ) Mind golems was not that hard. I set off traps to their paths -skull trap works well here- and then cut them quickly. And yes, they worth some good xp, indeed.
For elder brain, I summoned two zombie lords and let them do the job for me.
However, I was not wounded neither newbie. :D

Interesting approach. My receipe for mindflayers were missiles, however, with a 6-char party. They died pretty quick - backstabbing also helps to counter them. I'm curious how the fight might be like with 4 chars only ....

Part of the challenge is I'm a 5 player party with a bard.

And yes, I have had a fish hook stuck in my ear. Strangely, it did not hurt. Had to get a neighbor (in this cast, a 14 year old girl) with a pair of pliers to pinch down the barb so I could pull it out.

    I was only 12.

It got a bit messy in the middle, but with the usual buff's and a couple of undead helpers, it was a doddle to sort out. I even forgot to send in my Pally to fight! (Spread the party out a bit - micro management stylie and forgot to attack). Really just hacked them all down with a fighter, druid and 2 undead. Will saves? we spit on them with the druid's +20...

Having said that, some of the mindflayers may well have escaped. Well, they'll be back I'm sure.

Sunfire is good, but animate dead for a decent level sorcerer just rocks. Rapidly becoming a personal fave. (Much like BG2)

I once heard that Mindflayers can suck out the brains from their victims. Can this be seen as animated in game? If so, I will let one of my members' brain sucked out. :hahaerr:

[IMG] I've just entered the Zindha Citadel and my rogue can't seem to disarm the lightning traps. The disarm trap icon never shows when she's using thieving ability, only the pick pocket. I've removed everything from her inventory completely in case something was keeping her from performing properly, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've gotten very frustrated as I don't know how else to destroy or disarm the lightning. Brute force doesn't seem to work and neither does having a caster knock. Anyone have other suggestions?

I reported a similar problem. Try using a non-thief to disarm. That might work.

In the end, I just sent in undead (zombie lords, greater boneyards) who can suck up electricity. They killed the generators for me.

If you kill all mindflayers on your way towards exit exept the one guarding the exit, and then go and talk to elder brain with a character with high intimidate skill, you can persuade him to let you exit the citadel without a fight. It's a good way for a party with no healing spells and potions:)

I used a bunch of animate dead beasts to wander around, slaughtering everything they came into contact with. I had my drow rogue lead them around, and he acted as bait, drawing a few enemies to the undead at a time. I found though, that if your character runs away too quick and hides in shadows, the enemies will go to the rest of your party. This wasn't too hard to counter though, since I sent my dwarf in as first strike and he almost never got affected by the flayers' spells...oh, and my mage cast disintegrate as often as possible, just to make things a little easier.
All in all, the mindflayer fortress took a while, but it wasn't all that hard (not nearly as hard as in BG2)

I don't think you disarm the traps with the actual disarm pointer, but rather you pick pocket a diamond from the socket and it stops shooting you.

I took on this base with a solo sorcerer, that thanks to soloing was around lvl 17. I cast on myself Mind Blank first, making me immune to any of their thought invaders, plus I was wearing Houndstooth Collar, so no panic or fear either. Throw in a Ring of freedom of movement-

Immune to: Fear, Panic, Domination, Charm, Confusion, Hold, and anything else that would render my character 'red' or 'yellow' I ran in, let fly two Wail of the Banshees and that was all there was to it. :)

I found a paladin with high savings and lots of undead by his side to pummel the ilithid senseless so my mages could blow them away with spells very usefull as well :)

My wizard got INT drained, but seeing how she was a good full meal for the Ilithid, I was able to interrupt his feasting.

Here's how I did it: as soon as the mind flayers start casting, I let my wizard cast magic missle on them. That way their spell was destrupted, and in the meantime, my fighters were dealing some serious damage. So the mind flayers don't get the chance to cast again, by that time they are dead. For the rest of that area I just summoned a whole army and cast prayer on them. I got through like that quite easy. The mind golems I defeated by casting haste and bull's strength and other power-enhancing stuff. I let the golem follow my rogue, and in the meantime I was slashing and bashing him to pieces. (he really couldn't handle 4 greater boneguards!)
