I read something very odd today and I think that I need some clarification from those living in the North American continent...

I read that "America" was named after a Welshman named 'ap Meryk' = 'son of Meryk'.

I was under the impression that it was Columbus who first coined the term, but then American history is not my strong point...

Now if it was actually Columbus, then what does "America" mean in Spanish/Portuguese?

I was always taught it was named after Amerigo Vespucci, some contemporary of Columbus.

But I don't live in North America, so you weren't asking me, so I'll be quiet.

America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian sailor and the guy who travelled there after Columbus and saw more of it. Columbus up to the last of hid days believed he found just another way to India.

Edit: ooops, HB came in my way ;)

So what is Amerigo in Italian then?

Amerigo was the guy's name so that is what it is in Italian.

Amerigo Vespuci was a mapmaker (as well as a sailor), and made some of the very first maps of the New World.

Falstaff is the most accurate. Amerigo Vespucci was the first person to attempt to map the North American continent. I have no idea who that other guy is you mentioned - never heard of him before.

And yes, as Chev has said, Columbus didn't live long enough to find out he had (re)discovered a new continent. The funny part is that we have a National Holiday (Oct 12th - the date he made landfall) in his honor. All this despite the fact that A) Native Americans had "discovered" the continent somewhere between 12,000 and 15,000 years previously B) Lief Erikson had "discovered" the continent about 500 years previously C) He didn't know he was in a new place when he accidentally discovered it.
