I greatly enjoyed this game. I found it to be a real gem. At the time it was released there was some fan modification going on, but I believe that petered out. There was also some talk of a sequel that turned out to be very unlikely.

However I've paid no attention to the game since then. Since the forum for the game is very quiet I'm assuming that there's little hope of a sequel coming... am I correct, or have I missed some news on it?

I'd say any hopes of a sequel any time soon are 99% unlikely. Troika, the game's developers, have gone bankrupt shortly after the game's release. Atari could get another studio to develop a sequel, but since the game, like the original adventure, was quite self-contained, I think that that's unlikely. A "sequel" in the sense of doing another adventure like they have ToEE wouldn't be that unlikely, though. I'm not sure what happened to the game engine and all of Troika's IP after they've gone bankrupt; if it was all contracted by Atari they now own it and could reuse it. If not, who knows.

As for modifications, our hosted site Circle of Eight is quite active in that respect. All of their largest modifications and tools are available right here on SP.

CO8 has been creating a full conversion called Keep of the Borderlands. They have been developing it for awhile and I thought it would probably turn into vaporware like a lot of large scale modifications. However, they recently released a beta version of with a few levels, so there is a chance this mod sees the light of day.

Other than that, you should play the game with their standard mod pack at least once. It adds quite bit of content.
