At the beginning, in the big healing tent, there's a guy who asks you to take a letter to his love. If you mention it to the priest of the Red Knight in the back, said priest will reveal that the person is a doppleganger infiltrator and give you a replacement letter. He suggests leaving the doppleganager in place to provide misinformation.

You can then go back and out the doppleganger and kill it.

I've always wound up fighting it, but is there any long-term consequence for letting it live? Even just a dialog mention?

P.S. Going to talk to Shawford right before the bridge battle, I have JUST under 3000XP, insufficient to level up to level 3. I could have sworn I used Hold Person and Rainstorm during the palisade battle, so did I miss some little XP reward, or do you only get promoted to 3rd level after talking to Shawford and getting the final reward for convincing the Iron Collar mercenaries to report to their posts?

Not as far as we know. I never heard any mention of consequences.

Good question. Every guide and walk-through says to go back and kill him. I always have.

(His demise usually pushes my parties over the edge from 1st to 2nd level).

Next time through I'll leave him alive for awhile to see what happens.

The only thing I can think of: If you leave it alive AND fail to deliver the letters to the Luskan forces, it MIGHT join the ambush on you at the River Caves entrance.

Most likely, though, you'll just end up skipping perfectly good kill exp.
