Hi, I'm new to the board but was wondering if anyone has any ideas about why my BGII won't work?

A little tech info for ya first.

I am running Windows 7 (64-bit) and have over 100GB of free HD space.
I have a 2.4GHZ Intel Dual core processor, Soundblaster Xfi Xtreme audio card, dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT graphics card.

I have installed SoA and ToB, I have also installed the BGII-ThroneofBhaal_Patch_26498_ENGLISH patch.

The game worked fine until the begining of last December, when I tried to enable the cheats console in the .ini file. The game hasn't worked since!

I uninstalled the game and deleted all files from my HD. I checked to make sure none were left. I then reinstalled the games and patch two weeks later.

The process I follow (and have always followed) to start a game is

    1. Select Shadows of Amn from main screen (where you can choose either SoA or ToB)
    2. Select Multiplayer
    3. Select Connect (which then displays my settings of TCP/IP)
    4. Select Create Game
    5. Enter Session Name
    6. Enter Player Name
    7. Select either New Game or Load Game (happens with either option)
    8. Then screen goes blank and nothing happens.
    9. I then need to use Task Manager to close the program as it states “Not Responding”.

The weird thing is that I had this same problem with Vista, even though I had never attempted the cheats console.

I noted that Windows Update log has a "Security" update occuring a week before the problem started; although, my automatic Restore Point setting has no restore points noted prior to 31/12/2010, so I can't restore the system prior to the problem starting!

If any one has any ideas of how to sort this, I'd be very grateful for your assistance.

    Cheers

Have you tried the other MP settings instead of TCP/IP? I am assuming you are just trying to play MP to create all 6 characters?

Does this only occur, when creating a multiplayer game?
When yes, it seems to be kind of a Windows native firewall problem.

If nothing else helps you, you might consider installing a 3rd party firewall, and then manually allow the BG2.exe as a safe executable.
You can do so with Zone Alarm.
I'm not familiar with the later Windows versions (using XP), but maybe there is a similar option within the native firewall (or networking security whatever) settings.

I currently use Zone Alarm as well with Win 7. I have had no problems befoer or after installing Zone Alarm when running MP games. Though I can only do so when I believe I run on one of the 3 other options, not TCP/IP.

Thanks for the suggestion not to use TCP/IP...works a treat now! Must remember to use Serial in future.

    Thanks guys
