Any thoughts on the popularity growth of games in general?

Video games, if considered broadly, have gained incredible popularity in recent years. Consoles, PC, cel phones, hand helds, internet based games and so on. It seems like just a few years ago people who played games were, well, kind of, uh, "gamey". You know what I mean, a little nerdy, maybe a little more introspective, etc. I certainly am so I'm not flaiming anyone here-I don't want anyone to take offense. Now, everyone seems to be playing games and its a huge industry.

Now, I'm not at all saying this is a bad thing. The better the industry, the better the games, etc. And, I like that all kinds of people are playing all kinds of games-it really surprises me who I meet coincidentally that is in the middle of Half-Life 2 or something.

At the same time, I've been playing electronic games seriously for the last six years, and was a big time player when I was much younger on an Apple IIe, Atari 2600, and Intellivision, etc. I'm not the best gamer in the world and I'm not saying that at all, but the gaming world has agrown a great deal and its a bit less private than it used to be. I'm not sure where I stand on it, I suppose its cool. I just wondered if there were any other thoughts about it from the posters on Sorcerers?

The problem is that the industry is not getting better, and the games suck. Everything is now aimed at the large number of casual gamers, the lowest common denominator, so to speak - and thus the niche markets (ie. RPGs) get screwed.

The biggest problem, as far as I am concerned, is that all new games are exactly the same, simply made to look nicer, or with a few extra bits. But there have been no new (in terms of being different) games for years, most are either strategy, or first person shooters. Not only that, but just about every new game is either a sequel, or a clone. When was the last time a completely different game, that had done something that had never been done before, was released?

Sadly yes; I haven't even seen a hint of a good RPG since BG2 was released -even the newest Zelda (Minish Cap) was much more immature than what it used to be. :(

If you are interested to hear about it in detail, I'll be putting up a review today, to my homesite.
