I've just discovered Trip-Hop and similar genres in the last few years, and I love it. Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Hooverphonic, Dido, Sneaker Pimps, Poe and Tricky are some of my best known favorites as of late. I'm also a huge fan of the likes of Crystal Method, Prodigy, and The Chemical Brothers (though they're more Techno than Trip-hop, I suppose?).

Any Trip-Hop and/or Electronica fans here that can recommend something good? I figure with all the Europeans here at SP, this is a great place to ask.

Album recommendations are welcome. Even if you just want to say who you're listening to lately, that cool too.

Yeah I also enjoy some trip-hop once in a while, but I'm afraid I don't have any particularly good suggestions.

Try out lamb, and portishead . Since you like massive attack ( i presume you have the newest release, 100th window) you should get your hands on blue lines, which was created when tricky was part of massive attack. You might also be intrested in their no-protection cd which is massive attack songs remixed by other bands.

On a side note, once you start listening to massive attack, movies will never be the same, go listen to the matrix, hackers or anti-trust and try to find the massive attack song.

Actually, 'Protection' is the only album of theirs I own, but I've heard a lot about 'Blue Lines' and I think I'll pick that one up next. Didn't know tricky was ever in MA; that would explain why the MA song 'Eurochild' has the exact same lyrics as 'Hell is 'round the corner' by Tricky.

I like Massive Attack and Morcheeba. Massive Attack have some songs which really follow me around. In particular "teardrop" is following me, as soon I hear it. Morcheeba is the same, only they go a lighter form of sad tunes.

Damn, Rome wasn't build in a day. Following me. You remembered me. Now it takes a week to get rid of it.

Lamb is the one I listen most to, when it comes to Trip-Hop. Massive Attack is good, too. Gotta find some new ones, soon.

Massive Attack are amazing - their latest CD is disapointing. Blue lines is v good, I think Mezzanine is their masterpiece, but that's only really cos I like the guitars a bit more... get them all anyway - the singles collection is also worth having (but probably not worth buying :) ).

Try Portishead also, specially the Roseland NYC Live album.

I like Chemical Brothers and Prodigy. Not so much of a fan of the others you mentioned.

Anyone know what Aphex Twin is classed as? I'd guess it's more sort of electronic and wierd.

Heheh, back again, didnt finish my post yet.

Chemical Brothers and Prodigy are considered Trip-Hop? I thought it was more like Breakbeats/Underground sort of thing.

Btw: Does anyone know Mikatone? It's a bit like Lamb, a bit more Drum&Bass/Jazz tunes perhaps, but I love them. I thought Mikatone is from Germany. I would surely give it a try!

    @ Master of Nuhn

Yeah, Prodigy and Chemical aren't trip per se, but they still fall under electronica/techno/breakbeat or whatever. I'm looking for recommendations in their area as well.

    How about Zero-7 anyone?

[IMG] Zero7 is GREAT! Got their CD Simple Things playing right now and I love it. It's a bit of a 'Lounge' thing as well. But Lounge seems to have an other meaning then where I live. I don't mean the Ambient stuff, but more the sounds like Yonderboi, Tosca, Thievery Corperation, Kruder&Dorfmeister, etc, etc...

    Edit:
And oh.. If you like Big Beats/Breakbeats, you might like Junkie XL (or JXL for his cover of Elvis' 'Lil less conversation').
For the Electronics/Breakbeats, you could try 'Layo&Bushwacka!'. A bit less agressive than Prodigy. BT is quite nice, a mixtue of Trance and Breakbeats. 21st Century Breaks is a compilation mixed by Soul of Man & Phantom Beats.
Goldie is pretty funny as well. Or is he considered as Jungle/D&B?

Kid Loco could be classed under Lounge/Triphop. Maybe that would be a nice addition to your CD collection. And I highly recommend Waldeck.

(addition to my earlier post: I also own Mezzanine by Massive Attack.)

Thanks Master of Nuhn! Both Zero7 and Thievery Corporation are on my big 'next' list. I just placed an order for some good stuff that should be here in about a week:

Prodigy: Fat of the Land (can't believe I don't own this already)

Morcheeba: Big Calm (I've heard it's her best)

    Hooverphonic: Blue Wonder Power Milk

    Olive: Trickle (LOVE her voice)

Crystal Method: Tweekend (supposed to be their harderst yet)

Groove Armada: Love Box (Took a chance on this one)

I'm thinking about picking up some Portishead soon, but my first impression of them when I first heard them in like '98 was that their stuff is really sad and depressing. Is this true, and if so does it kill the music for you? I like to maintain a chipper attitude when I can. :)

Also, has anyone heard the new album from Kelli Ali? She's the super-hot former singer of the Sneaker Pimps who's just gone solo. Her album's gotten good reviews and I really want to pick it up, but since it's an import I haven't been able to find it stateside, even online, for under $25. :whoa: If It's really worth it I'm not above biting the bullet, but still. Anyone?

    Nice Death Rabbit!

Which album of Thievery Corporation would you order? I got The Mirror Conspiracy, Sounds from the Thievery HI-FI and The Richest man in Babylon. All are good.

If you like Lounge (I guess you do), you should have anything of the !K7-lable. Tosca 'Suzuki' is a wonderfull album. Better then their last, IMO. Kruder & Dormeister's 'K&D sessions' is also a must have.

Sheesh, I got quite a list of TripHop/Lounge Artists I would recommend :o

Dunno. Which do you consider the best representative of their work? I'm not sure I've heard anything of theirs, but I have a friend who highly recommended them. Well, 2 counting you. :D

I like lounge, but one thing that I feel is lacking from say, Massive Attack, are nice warm powerful thumping beats. Olive and Dido pull this off very nicely. Smooth, angelic lyrics over a mellow melody, driven by a nice cutting drum beat. These speak to me the most, maybe because I'm a drummer I suppose. Much of Massive's beats are very subtle - though still very cool. If you've ever heard '2-Wicky' by Hooverphonic or 'Honestly OK' by Dido, you'll know what I mean.

    trip hop is awesome.
Aphex Twin is considered Intelligent Dance Music (IDM)

Prodigy and Chemical brothers are way good too except the last two chem albums have sucked =[. If you like their music you should check out Manchild, Fatboy Slim, death in vegas, hedrock valley beats, crystal method, uberzone, elite force, faithless and FC Kahuna.

If you like Dido, you ought to check out Faithless. Her brother is in the band and she is on every album.

    @ outputrotation

Who's her brother - Craig Armstrong?

I'm actually glad you posted - I too am originally from Utah, where I first started getting into this type of music. I miss the music scene there. Everything in Texas is redneck rock, but the Electronica scene in Utah was great. There are a lot of great local bands. But this is off topic a bit and should be on my other post on Utah in Sorcerous Sundries. :)

Aphex Twin's videos give me nightmares. That one where the lyrics are "I will eat your soul" and all the little kids with wierd heads run around and smash stuff and scare old ladies. Eeeeek!

I've been interested in Death in Vegas since that 'without you' song was on the radio every 5 minutes. They kind of disappeared after that though, which means I probably would have good luck finding their CD in a CD-Exchange store.

I've only heard that "Runnin' around robbin' banks for Scooby Snacks" song and a few others, but from what I've heard I don't think so. Trip-Hop is usually distinguished by sampling, synth and heavy electronic beats and sounds. They play acoustic instruments, don't they? They seem more like light funk to me, but I could be wrong.

death rabbit, you aren't missing anything. the electronic/rave scene or whatever is dead over here just like over there. If you want to hear any talent you have to go to the clubs now... which isn't bad if you don't mind all the club nonsense that goes along w/ it.

what part of UT were you from?

Her brother is Roland (Rollo) Armstrong.

heh, you mean *Dirty* Vegas. Death in Vegas is fronted by Richard Fearless who is badass.

Aphex Twin is amazing, he is the only person ever to put an actual image into music. I wish I had a website I could link it to...
