Anybody here dislike the romances?

Just wondering if I'm the only one. I just find them dull, and I want to have a fantasy roleplaying adventure, no romancing.

I guess I just kinda want to recreat the days of being a kid and playing D&D with some friends.

Well, I do often find it very annoying as to when they speak up. "Hey, I'm trying to do something here! Can't we talk later?" And the Bioware romances are so mediocre at the first stage, IMO. But I do find that it helps immerse me in the atmosphere and put myself deeper into the role, especially when romancing someone who I don't like. (For example, my female pally currently romancing Annoyman. :p ) In order to even bear some of them, I am almost forced to submerge my own persona in favor of that of the character. And in the roleplaying is where I have a lot of my fun. :) (The most is in the strategic situations, but roleplaying comes in a close second.)

I don't find them dull as so much as I find them tiresome. They take to long to anywhere what so ever IMO.

    Whoa romancing Ano :jawdrop:

I like the idea of romancing Jaheira or Viconia, because I think of them as old friends (from BG1). When not interrested in a romance I play a dwarf or some female figure (not using Anomen).

Yep. Nothing like a tender word from Anomen or Kelsey or Tsujatha over the still-twitching corpse of Grom-nir/Bohdi/Irenicus. :skeptic: :shake:

I find the core romances boring. The Flirt Pack brings life to them for the most part, until you've played that romance so much you know the flirts by heart.

    It depends on the romance.

Jaheira's is too long winded and 'fiddly'.

Kelsey's is just TOO MUCH. back off creep boy! ;)
    (what a drip).

Aerie's is too 'whiny' and 'needy'.

Solu's is a complete surprise and generally unwelcome (sorry but no!)

    Anomen's is fine (for me).

Viconia's is probably the best. I think they got this just right, good pace, tension and added encounters.

Personally I have always wanted a romance with Mazzy or Korgon!

    Maybe I am just weird.

P.S. - This is all about the role play okay, do not read anything into this. :)

P.P.S. - Oh and yes they DO interupt at the wrong times. I have just had Kelsey smooch up to me as I was struggling against that Wraith guy in the TOB swamp (Giant boys mom). "Look naff off dip-s**t, I am REALLY busy"... *graphic of disintegrating hand comes up*... Grrrr.

There are two Mazzy romances in the works: one at SHS (IIRC), and one being developed by one of our very own (I'll leave specifics up to them if they want to give them). A Korgan romance was suggested at RPG Dungeon, but only as something of a gag; I believe the title of the thread was "Korgan romance mod: worst idea ever?" :shake:

As much as I realize that it is a fantasy game, I really would have liked it if the romances would have followed a course at least vaguely resembling the development of a REAL romance or relationship. What we're left with is a level of complexity and realism that seems roughly equivalent to that of a fourth grader's literary ability.

I don't know if you've ever tried but dialoge takes quite a while to write. Romances in general are increadibly complex dialoge sequences, well compared to the others anyway, and take a good deal of time to write. Not to offend you or anything, just thought I'd put that out there.

I have never found the BG2 romances to be that interesting either.

Eh, I can take 'em or leave 'em. In the beginning, I thought they were stupid. I'd beaten the game twice before I ever actively tried one. By "actively" I mean deliberately choosing the best answers to try to follow it through to it's conclusion. The reason for this is probably because during my first go-through, I had both Jahiera and Aerie in my party, had no idea Jahiera's banters were love talks, and followed Aerie's progression as far as I could before I wanted to smack her into next Tuesday.

Later on, though, I gave them all a go and learned to appreciate the romances. Though I think Jahiera's is by far the richest (especially in terms of content) I've always been quite partial to Viconia's. It seems more passionate and dramatic than the rest. Plus, she really puts out. ;)

They certainly serve to involve you more in the game by adding depth and humanity to the characters. I think they definitely are a benefit, but if I'm in the mood to just kick ass then I'll have a female PC and leave out Anomen.

    Amen to that! :shake:

Personally, I think Jaheira's is the best; Aerie is worryingly pathetic. Viconia's I'm fairly ambivalent about. However, nothing has killed my attempts to play a female character like Anomen. When the idiotic "love music" kicks in and he starts piping up about his "accomplishments", RPing goes out the window as I reach for the Reform Party button...

And what is it with the whole "romance = therapy" thing that BioWare has going on? :smash:

Personally, I'm waiting for the Nalia Romance to be completed. Damn my weakness for redheads... :shake:

I was, mistakenly, hoping they would be like the one(s) from Treasures of the Savage Frontier.
Yes. Of course, it works better with Jaheira or Viconia as they programmers really didn't need to do much. They assumed you took either or both into your BG party.

I've found Viconia to be too opposite of any PC I play. And being Jaheira's 'rebound man' just makes me ill, considering she's whom I feel is a mother-figure to the PC.

The Viconia romance is the best of the Bioware ones for me; so much conflict and tension. Love isn't easy! Aerie and Anomen tie for worst; they're both INCREDIBLY needy. Jaheira's would be great, except that I agree with Kuemp: it's slightly creepy to be romancing someone who's husband JUST DIED! And creepier still in that she IS, in fact, very much a mother-figure to the PC. I really don't understand why Bioware favors her romance so much.

Of the mod NPC romances I've played, I like Fade the best. Much like with Viconia, there's lots of conflict. Plus, you don't have to walk on eggshells with her: you can argue and not kill the romance immediately.

Nathaniel is closest to my heart, but he's SOOOO serious, and forever apologizing and refusing to talk about things. VERY high maintenance.

Sarelith was very refreshing in that you're given the option to fall in love at first sight: you can skip all the "when is something going to HAPPEN" nonsense of most of the romances. However, I have a strong dislike of paladins, and get annoyed with being told what I MUST and MUST NOT do.

Kelsey talked INCESSANTLY, which wouldn't be that bad, except, frankly, he's a wuss. And of all the romances, he had the WORST timing; always starting a love talk right before, right after, or sometimes right in the MIDDLE of a battle.

Haven't romanced Tsujatha yet: I found it incredibly hard to take him seriously after I heard him say "There is something about the lack of stars which I cannot endure". You need to hear it for yourself to know what I mean.

Which is triggered when in a dungeon/underground setting. Remember, Tsu is from a different planet/plane of existence. I like him a lot and consider him the Bad Boy for female PCs.

I never found Kelsey too talkative. Then again, my hubby gives a new definition to sesquipedal.

It's the voicing that gets me, Kuemp. "Which I cannot enduuuure". So overenunciated. It cracks me up.
