    I read about a series once a long time ago -- I was in the bookstore and read the back of the book. I have since forgotten the title but the premise has stayed with me and I'd like to read it. The premise was:

    In a space/sci-fi setting, an organization turns out battallions of really tough mercs. Once a group of these mercs is forged, they are sent out into the galaxy. Their ranks are never replenished. As time goes on, their numbers dwindle to pregressively smaller military units (I'm sorry, I don't know the order or relative sizes of military units.) This was the story of one of those units.

    Ring any bells?

    I don't know the name of the series -- I'll look for the one you mentioned and see if that's it. I take it the one you mentioned is rather sucky?
