it's a question I've been asking myself in th last few days. I met this girl through a friend, I don't mind her she seems OK enough. She wants me, so much is obvious (she's a bit.. needy though). But, I find her to be a bit common and I'm off put by it. Should I be? Does that make me a snob? Am I just being nasty? I'm not exactly rich or 'upper class' myself. I'm from a working class family. What actually makes a person snobby?

I think it's when you act superiour to someone else due to station. Have I got that right?

No, I have so mixed background I can blend with all kinds of different people. I live, at the moment, in a nice middle class house, but it wasn't always so, and I remeber that. Pretty much everybody just thinks I'm weird. Poor guy with good manners and so on.

Barmy, you noticed it's bothering you that it's bothering you (was that English?). So there's still hope for you.

I would say that I am a snob even though I get along with most people. I do prefer intelligent, well educated (and I do not mean college educated), thinking, questioning people.

Start off with a funny: You're not being a snob by rebuffing her advances, Barmy - you're just maintaining standards! :p ;)

But seriously, the Compact OED defines 'snob' as:
    While Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary says:
The former tends to be a little stricter and limited in scope, while the latter is a somewhat looser definition and more encompassing.

Really, in today's society, I'd say snobbery goes on in all directions, against those who do not have knowledge, skills, acumen, assets, cultural background, etc. etc. by those who do.

For instance, an average office. Most of the employees are soccer fans and follow the FA cup with interest; doubtlessly they look down on those coworkers that wouldn't be able to tell if someone's offside.

Especially online, snobbery takes place - those who know, typically not just consider themselves superior to those who don't, they seem obligated to announce it to everyone.

And I desire to be 'classless' in my dealings with people - I prefer to find out what they're like as individuals rather than categorize, so that I can despise them for the individuals that they are. :p

"I don't hate Jim because he's tall, or because he's rich, or because he's black; I hate him because he's a jerk!" :D

But despite that desire, I'd have to concur with Nakia - I prefer to congregate with thoughtful, semi-intellectual people...and those who can appreciate a wisecrack or 'coarse humor'. :)

EDIT: and this reminds me of my favourite tv ad of all time:
    {black screen, camera pans over faintly glimering outline of a sleek automobile}

Announcer (with text in gothic script creeping up screen):
    A car is a car.
It won't make you younger, or sexier,
and if it improves your standing with the neighbors,
    then you live among snobs.
    A car is plastic, metal, rubber and glass;
    A machine.

And in the end, may the best machine win.
    {Logo of car company that I cannot remember}

I am officially a snob then, as I reserve the right to look down on people who:

Enjoy a trip to KFC/McDonalds/Burger King.
    Wear tracksuits as a fashion.
Drive done up cars worth less than my watch especially with r’n’b at full volume.
Have large gold hoop earrings or sovereign rings
Have the Croydon face lift hair style.
Say ‘init doe’ ‘ya get me’.
Are chavvy mums that scream and hit their kids in the supermarket
Have more crisps, sweets, coke and frozen food in their trolleys than fresh fruit and veg.
    Shop at Lidl.
Name their kids/are named Crystal, Mercedes, Wayne, Mary-Lou, Lexi.
Go on holiday to the same resort in Greece or Spain every year, mostly all inclusive, and eat full Irish/English breakfasts in the morning and spaghetti bolognaise in the evening and think the height of exotic is a pedalo for the day.

If this is you, you have my disdain. Sorry, it's just the way it is.

What about you, fellow SPers? Do you have any snobby attributes?

    Hmm, I look down at:
    • drinkers of flavoured teas, with the sole exception of good yasmine tea (which I consider a luxury; the price suggests as much)
    • people who can't enjoy coffee flavoured coffee
    • everyone who loves starbuck
    • people whose shopping carts solely are filled with deep fried food and soft drinks
    • folks who think that everything foreign is per se great
    • vulgar, indiscrete and noisy people - like those entertaining the whole tram
    • people who wear clothing their physical shape prohibits
    • dogs and dog owners, in the superior way a cat looks down at them (like from a tree)
    The list is incomplete.

I'm a snob in regards to music, movies, books, and tv series. I want to be entertained well. Some people just want to be entertained.

I agree with how empath defined 'snob'. In answer for myself: yeah, I'm probably a snob (and agree with most of the points BA made).

Hmmm....similar views as BA and Ragusa...scary.

    • Enjoy a trip to McDonalds/Burger King/Carl's Jr./Taco Bell/etc
    • "rice rockets" or "bean burners" in general. For those of you who don't know these terms, a "rice rocket" is usually an Acura Integra, TSX, RSX, or Legend that has a body kit (usually not matching), low profile tires/rims, it's usually lowered to the absolute limit, tinted windows that exceed the legal limit, and have those huge/noisy mufflers that do nothing more than amplify the car's lack of horsepower. A "bean burner" has all the afore mentioned "features" but is usually a Chevy S-10, Ford F-150, or one of those 80's styled sedans that are about the same size as a barge. :skeptic:
    • People that listen to anything that's on the "Top 40" radio station...which 99% of the time is pop or RnB....the other 1% is Nickleback, or some Emo band. :nono:
    • Typical Utah drivers
    • Parents that bring their kids to inappropriate events/places and times. Two people went to see '300' with a toddler, a infant, and a kid that looked under 10 years old. :grr:
    • Rednecks and white trash.
That's all I can think of right now, but I'm sure there's more. :rolling:

The distinction between snobbish and prejudiced appears to be blurring.

I have many prejudices (distain for things such as illegal drugs, violence, intentional ignorance, and morbid obesity), but I do not know if I am snobbish.

Why? If you can get something cheaper at one place than at an other (the same brand or same quality), I think it's one's responsibility to go for the cheaper alternative, in order to promote competition in business.

I would agree with Barmy's lists, but add the following:

    1. People with tattoos and football shirts, swear loudly and drink (crap) lager
    2. People who are so blindly patriotic that they refuse to admit their country's shortcomings and chequered past, and answer these things with threats of violence.
    3. Own Bulldogs
    4. Wear more than two pieces of clothing with the Union Jack on them (cufflinks count as one item), without it being a special occasion.
    5. People who have shaved heads, again without good reason.
    6. People who have those stupid flag things that became so popular during the world cup.

I do, because they have cheap and excellent quality stuff.

And I don't think I'm a snob - I'm always act superior and arrogant, and social class has nothing to do with it.

I can be a snob but also i'm not. It tends to vary with the people i'm around. I just like to fit in, but some things do annoy me and Daie has listed a lot of them.
