This topic is inspired by the LOTR threads.

I happen to love the artifacts from Tolkien series.

My favorite one is Ringil - the sword of Fingolfin. It grants speed to the wielder. Second best is the War Hammer of Aule: Grants Strengh and Wisdom. Trident of Ulmo, Aeglos the Snow Thorn of Gil-Galad, etc.

Btw the sword of Aragorn Dunedain Ranger and King is named Andurl: The Flame of the North.

    What are your favs?

    It has a STING!

Gotta love that dagger (short sword in the hands of a hobbit).

It illumines darkness, glows in the presence of enemies, and does mega damage when it is the only thing that can save Bilbo or Frodo's furry bottems!

Was Anglachel Turin's sword? Or was it Gurthang?(It's been a while since I've read the Simarillion)

Turin was one of my favorite character's!

    Artifact weapons? How about:

    Ravel's fingernail

This broken piece of Ravel's fingernail is over a foot long and looks like it has been used alternately as a back-scratching aid, garden trowel and nose-picker. Just looking at it makes you wish she bit her nails, or at least kept a file with her in the Maze.

This is a stab in the dark, Bel, but was one of those the name of the dragon he slew?

Perhaps one was wielded by your Turin (Turambar) and the other by Hurin, Tuor, or Huor? Or even two names for the same blade, it's been done before...

I know what you're saying, though, it's been a real long time since I've read that one too.

    --> Sir Bel:
The blade's name is Gurthang; after it became cursed (killing his own master from the hand of his best friend Beleg Cuthalion) it is sometimes referred as Mormegil.

Btw Beleg Cuthalion had one of the two most famous long bows.
The other one was owned by Bard (a name, not class), a simple warrior who slayed a Dragon (a fire one, don't recall the name) with his last enchanted elven arrow.

    As Dragons go:
    1) Glaurung - Father of all Dragons
    2) Smaug the Golden
    3) Ancalagon the Black
    4) Itangast the Fire Drake
    5) Tiamat the Celestial Dragon of Evil (she is a hottie)

Can't remember if there were more...

Isn't there a sword named Orcrist in the Hobbit or the Lord of Rings?

    --> Mollusken:

Yep, there were three elven sword mates forged in the times of Orc Wars:

    weakest - Orcrist
    middle - Glamdring (Gandalf's sword)
    strongest - Aeglin

they all slay orcs and have a couple more powers

Orcist was buried with the Dwarf King who went with Bilbo through the Hobbit (Thoramier?)

Two of those swords were found with Sting in the Troll's lair.

On the Artifact Note, what about Boremier's (I can't spell any of their names correctly, it's been way too long) HORN?

    Increases morale and summons aid!

Yep, Thorin Oakenshield is the man I was thinking of.

Sheesh, I MUST read those books again. I have a great memory, but it's been over 15 years. The details are way too fuzzy.

    Thanks for the assist!

  17. [IMG] Biter and Beater can't be beaten, weapon-wise and for their literary impact.

In The Lord of the Rings, after the Orcs captured everyone in the cave, before they found the Ring, they scatter the whole group of Orcs with those two swords.

That's where we get our first glimpse of a long-sword bearing wizard, and the scene where every RPG game in the universe was first born.

[IMG] Actually Anglachal and Gurthang are both the names of Turin's sword! (I'm so knowledgeable!) Anyway, while trying to figure that out, I found a cool site...Check it out:
    http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm

    It's a Tolkien Online Encyclopedia...Pretty, neat, eh precious? :D
