is there any use in having a thieving skill above 100?

and the assiasin kit has a max. backstab of x7, but at wich lvl will he reach this? at level 13? or higher?

    thanks

Well, for starters, >100 helps offset any armour penalties, and for some skills such detect traps, it reduces the length of time for the detection to kick in.

    7X occurs at level 21.

ok, and to finish it up, does anyone know when x6 will occur?

I want to dualclass my thief to a fighter, but in sort of waiting for the right time...

    I thought that it was
    x6 at lvl 16
    x7 at lvl 20

Also thieves get penalties when they are in a light area (you can check these on the lightmaps - viewable with infinity engine explorer)

I didn't know that! Did you figure that out from in-game experience, or working with the engine, or is it just general public knowledge? I can't remember ever stumbling across that in Ragusa's or Chris Lee's thief guides.

It seems like there is always something new to learn from these games...

I was under the impression that you got an increase every four levels, but it starts at X2, which is why it takes to level 21.

I thought it look like this:

    Level 1: X2
    Level 5: X3
    Level 9: X4
    Level 13: X5
    Level 17: X6 (assassin only)
    Level 21: X7 (assassin only)

IMO, the extra bonus to backstab isn't worth it. Any pure thief can max out all of his abilities (and even multi-class and dual-class can with ToB installed) but it will take far longer to max everything out with an assassin due to only getting +15% per level up. I'd rather get +25% per level up and become more profecient with all my thieving abilities sooner.

I may be wrong about this but I think the time to detect is actually just the computer re-rolling every round or so. A higher detect reduces the time to find traps by making sure you spot it on the first round, instead of having to wait around a few rounds for a successful check.

I wholeheartedly think that the x7 backstab multiplier is worth it. We all know we can get through the game relying on Imoen's thieving skills so the skills of an assassin however stunted are more than enough.

A 23 strength critical backstab kills mostly everything.

True, but at X7, it overkills almost everything. There are very few times I have experienced where I actually needed X7 as opposed to X5. I think the bigger advantage with an assassin is the poison damage, which can get through certain protections such as stoneskin. Plus, I usually make fighter-thieves, and their extra melee skills more than make up for their reduced backstab (not to mention putting 2* in single weapon style doubles your chances of a critical hit).

Well, I may be wrong as well (wouldn't be the first time), but I think a 100 pretty much guarantees detection in a round, and more gives the detection earlier in the round. I'm pretty sure I've read that somewhere, but I'm not sure where (and it could have been mis-information anyway). And I know from experience that the higher the score is (over 100), detection seems to happen faster; might just be my imagination, though.

The only skills that need improving past 100 points are pickpocket, hide in shadows and move silently, all others are unnecessary. Though don't improve them past 255 point, or they will reset themself (in other word, 256 point means 0 points, and so on)
