Assassin/Mage?

Discussion in 'BG2: Throne of Bhaal (Classic)' started by Lord Sarevok, Dec 23, 2001.

Ok, I posted this earlier but for some reason it's not on here.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Swashbuckler/Mage and all Thief/Mages in general, so I thought I'd try an Assassin/Mage. This is also very good from a roleplaying view as well. This is my first time playing a theif as the protaganist. Here are my questions: (try to answer these from a roleplaying perspective, please, no "get blank because it is the best")

    1. What level should I dual class at? I'd like 95 in lockpicks 85 in find traps and a X5 backstab modifer if possible. I'll only put 50 in the stealth skills since I can simply cast an invisibility spell once I'm a mage.

    2. What alignment should I be? Lawful Evil is nice since I'll get the best familiar and and evil would be more fitting for an Asssassin/Mage, although I'm not fond of playing evil and the only evil party member I really want is Viconia.

    3. What weapons should I specialize in? Crossbows seems fitting, since they are easy to use and a perfect weapon for assassination. Also any oriental blades seem fitting as well(scimitars, ninja-tos, wakasashis, katanas).

    4. What spells should I use? I was thinking anything with posion(melf's acid arrow, cloudkill, ect), disabling spells(stinking cloud, web, hold person), and illusions(siraculum, project image, mirror image, shadow door).

    Any help is welcome.

I have ToB installed so I have no problem dualing at a fairly high level so long as I can use both abilities throughout most of SoA.

    1: :(

2: I agree with you that the best alignment for an assassin would be LE. I see an assassin/mage rather as an assassin who uses magic to aid his thieving abilities, then a mage who uses his thieving abilities to aid his spells... ;)
My problem with evil characters is: Who will be in your party? There are not enough char. if you want a total evil aligned party....

3: Crossbow is a nice weapon for an ssn, but if I have to believe the info i got from an other website (ooohh!! ) there are not many freaky crossbows that a thief can use.
Light Crossbow of Speed is one, and Firetooth in ToB is an other nice one.
(BTW: to what ethos belong the weapons of an ssn/mage and where can i find such info? and maybe you can tell me where i can find some tables like influence of wisdom on savingthrows etc?)
I also like darts for ssns like darts of wounding/stunning or Asp's Nest.
In melee i think i would choose for scimitars (according to 'am-i-allowed-to-mention-an-other-website.com' there are a lot of scimitars Not Usable by: thief), katanas, daggers.

4: Is there a way to cast spells while staying unrevealed? Maybe you could try to put some 'range=touch' (3 times vampiric touch for example??) in a spell trigger, sneak up to him like the real ssn./mage...
I just mention some ideas, but that could be a nice ssn/mage-way, to stay in the rolplaying-sphere.. but i really got no clue!

    BTW: What would be your stats? str.14, dex.18, con.16, int.18, wis.11, cha.6

Can you where the elven chain? or what armour would you wear?

(Gees! I'm really interrested in this ssn/mage!)

You must be from the looks of it Master of Nuhn. =) I read your post in the game of the year poost I made...made me laugh. I guess playing SoA really does do that...you forget the other things in life...if only you could clear that darn illithid dungeon! ;)
I think there's a very useful document you can download from the "Tips n' Tricks" section under BGII on this very site, that explains some AD&D rules....with particular emphasis on CRPGs. IIRC it has loads of info on what stats do, THACO and AC, modifiers, how mages/clerics learn spells, dual classing and more. It was very useful for someone who knows little about the official ruleset (that's me!). That's one of the good things about BGII...you can totally customise how close you wanna get to the actual dice rolls and the rest that make these games so good.

And an assassin/mage is a pretty funky combination...especially the magic-to-support thief skills thing, can't see it working the other way. Would it be a half-elf, or a human d/c? Not sure on the multi-class potential here. Daggers are an obvious choicefor both an assassin and a mage, but they're not exactly tough weapons...RPG wise only really leaves short swords or foreign swords. And I'll take a bow over a crossbow any day...guess I'm old fashioned, but that's a realistic assassination weapon wouldn't you say? :)

[IMG] And this one is now here as well... As an exception, we won't be moving around posts like this on a regular basis.

3 vampiric touches in a spell sequencer! Good idea, I never really thought of that one. I could do a chill touch/ghoul touch for a minor sequencer as well.
