[IMG] Anyone out there with a good reason to play an assassin? It seems his thief skills progress to slowly to make him good at much other than hiding (which he obviously needs) so you are still likely to need Jan or someone in the party to take up his slack.

I messed with one a bit last night just because assassin sounds cool, but I'm unconvinced.

Their poison blade ability can come in handy. Especially against spell casters and the like. It basically prevents spell-casting, and does strong additional damage. The loss of skill points makes an assassin harder to play, but I believe that playing one would be a lot of fun.

The Assassin is really not that great if you're looking for an "allrounder" type of thief.
If you're looking for a nasty, evil little backstabber, though, the hit/damage bonus (and the poison attack!) will definitely come in handy.

But the most important thing is that your character is officially an "Assassin". That alone should be enough to play this class.

I be playing an asassin... solo
He is NOT an all-around thief, but he stil can be a decent trap remover and lockpicker, but if ye want a backstabber (good, really good Move Silently), ye have to sacrifice one ability (pickpocket in me case)
Poison weapon with backstab in compound give a strong cocktail of negative emotions to enemies, esp mages, as Lothar said (never killed Tolgerias in planar sphere with 1 hit? try asassin!)
Though I'd say they are not that harmful in combat as swashbucklers with their awesomely low AC and not as good as pure thiefs in jack-of-all-trades-thieving
(I wish asassin recieved to hit and dmg bonuses periodically :))

[IMG] The assassin´s poison weapon ability is really powerful and gets esopecially interesting with high dex and a ranged weapon, lets say a +3 bow with arrows of piercing and, of course, backstabbing.

For they only receive +15 thieving ability points per level you will have to sacrifice some thieving abilities for stealth. So it gets more intersting to play a race like the elf or halfling for their thieving ability boni.

Assasins rock! I include one in every multi-player party I make.

I am currently playing a party with one. They are the ultimate mage killer.

there are 2 rings in the game that could help the thieving skills of an assasin

    1 +25% lock pick, and 1 +25% trap detection

You cannot backstab with a ranged weapon. The equivilent of that is the archer's called shot skill. Backstabbing, by definition, is an action using a small, usually stabbing weapon, to pierce more vital areas from concealment behind the target. The called shot is a skill that in P&P allows for area-specific shots. In BG2, the skill merely gives the bonus of aiming at more vital organs, and increasing damage. (I'm not quite sure about the BG2 called shot thing there, someone correct me if I am wrong.)

[IMG] If you want to be a single class thief I think Assassin is very good. You can reach level 23 so the you'll be good at plenty of thief skills in the end.

Im playing with a assassin now i think they are great just to BE an assassin is worth the 5% skill loss. And the poison weapon comes in handy quite often.
But i wonder do assassins get backstab x7 as i have read somewhere but it doesnt say so in the kitdescription

    That would be very nice!

There's also a ring which you can get from deidre, in the back of the Adventurers Mart, if you have the bonus cd or if you have dowhloaded the merchants. The ring give, I believe, 25% to trap detecting, lockpicking and pickpocketting. Very good for one ring. Combine it with one of the earlier metioned rings and your skills increase by 50%!

  15. [IMG] I play an assassin/sorcerer team, and they are doing well. Let the sorcerer learn knock and then the assassin can be bad at lockpicks, too.

The poison arrows are helpful when circumstances won't allow a stealthy approach and backstab. And you can do a ton of damage to dragons and and anything else that misses their saves vs. poison with their special ability. Even npcs not damaged by your weapon will get poison damage.
