    1. you go into shadows.
    2. you go behind the baddy
    3. you attack (make sure you arn't fighting any kind of giants [golems, barberians ect])

    Enjoy the 4X dmg.

    P.S. If you are an assasin you can do up to 7X damage at high levels and you can poison your weapon.

    Assassins get extra backstabbing damage? Is this in the manual or an undocumented feature? I must have missed that one, but that's very cool to know.

    Do you have to hide in shadows???

    cant you just walk behind them and attack, without entering shadows, as long as they have their back turned at the thief?

    No, hiding is necessary for the backstab to work.
