3E is way better than 2E - once you get the feel for it, it'll be tough to leave IWD2 for the BG series.

This site has lots of fine guides for creating IWD2 characters (look 'em up in the Games\IWD2 section), but here's a really, really, really basic look at what was most confusing to me the first time through: multiclassing.

Multiclassing is much kinder and simpler in 3E. No more of this racial multiclassing or human dualclassing nonsense. Each time you go up a level, you can add any class you want. So rather than commit to being a fighter-thief from the outset, you can add fighter levels 'til you decide that it's time for a rogue level or two. Plus, each class requires the same exp. cost to advance, so mixing and matching is easy.

The only catch is that if your class levels are more than one level apart - e.g., Wizard 6/Rogue 3 - then you take a 20% exp. point penalty 'til you bring them back in sync. You can get around this by keeping your class quota balanced - say, Wizard 6/Rogue 5 - or by matching your race's favored class. The favored class doesn't count against the exp. penalty. So, for instance, if you make an aasimar character, since the aasimar's favored class is paladin, then a Paladin 12/Sorcerer 4 would avoid the penalty, but the Fighter 12/Sorcerer 4 would take the penalty. Humans have a favored class of "any", so they're a great choice if you're planning an unbalanced class mix.

Anyway, trust me, 3E is very easy to learn. Just create a bunch of different characters, play the game, and figure you'll have to restart a half-dozen times. Hey, why not - after all, it's a game!
