We got a free preview copy of this movie in for our video store this past week(at least I did). The movie itself wasn't great by any means, but it was watchable. Anayway, the reason this interested me is because of the setting it was in. They had it set in a strange medieval/sci-fi setting. It was basic sword play stuff(with a lot of cool weapons), but there was a lot a machanical stuff going on as well. It looked like a really interesting concept for a CRPG if done right. I suggest anyone interested to check it out when it becomes available to rent. Only problem for a CRPG though. No magic. Definately needs magic.

 

I saw Beowulf the other week, not a bad film there is certainly worse films out there. The setting was excellant a nice cross between a medieval fortress and a gas refinery, it helped give the film a individual feel of it's own. Using the story of Beowulf helped put the film a notch above the standard sword and sorcerey movie. I wonder if they got the idea to have Beowulf to be the son of a evil god from Baldurs Gate? Like I said above there are films a lot worse and all things said it's worth a look.

 

Yeah, I thought the Bhall spawn plot twist in there was interesting as well. Almost forgot about that. Sorry, I should rephrase from my first post. There certainly are a lot worse movies out there, and I didn't come away with a bad taste in my mouth by any means. It was ok, just not great. With the unique setting and ideas going on, there really was a chance to make it a better film than it was. But bad acting and subpar plot development hurt it in my view. Compared to other *sword a sorcerery* movies, it was above par and you could tell they put some thought and a little money into it. Not just the same old-same old. Like a said really cool setting. Worth a look.

 

In case you didn't know, Beowulf is a very, VERY old tale. I don't remember many specifics, but I believe it is of Anglo-Saxon origin. All I can recall is he was a blade wielding hero that slew many fictitious beasts, one such beast was called Grendel - some sort of troll perhaps? I'm sure you could find more at a library.

 

This poem was one of my favorite assignments in high school. It was written in Old English sometime before the tenth century A.D. Beowulf is a Scandinavian warrior of the sixth century. I don't remember any gods in his family tree, though. Grendel is a descendant of Cain, killer of his brother Abel. As God's punishment all of Cain's progeny became monsters.

It's a great story if you can find a modern translation. Old English gives me a bit of a headache.

How's that for way more than anybody wanted to know? Heh, heh...

 

I always liked Beowulf! My second favorite "classic" is "The Song of Roland." I wrote a paper on it in undergrad. It's great story, well worth reading...Especially if your looking for ways to role play a knight/paladin/cavalier. Roland and El Cid are pretty good examples.
