[IMG] I saw the new CG movie "Beowulf" last night. In a word: AWESOME! It's been a long time since I've read the saga, but I thought the movie was amazing! It's incredible what they can do with CG now, seeing Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie, Alyson Lohman and the rest of rhte cast rendered so well in computer animation was mind blowing.

Good, exciting story...I want to see it again in an IMAX theater...Has anyone else seen it? What did you think?

Okay, so I wasn't going crazy thinking I saw Angelina playing Grendl's mom (or whoever she played). I haven't seen it btw, but I thought it was normal CGI and not animating the actors, too.

Yeah, Grendel's Mum is not supposed to be hot. She is supposed to be an ugly demon-creature that kills things. I haven't seen it yet, but I might because it looked cool, and the book was alright.

I never read the original story/poem, so it didn't taint my enjoyment of the movie. Frankly, I wouldn't have cared if it deviated from the original story - I generally don't, if the subsequent adaptation ends up being a good story.

In any event, I saw it last night in digital 3-D, and it was amazing. Technologically a huge leap over The Polar Express, also directed by Zemeckis. I've only seen a 3-D movie twice before, and both times were at amusement parks: Michael Jackson's Captain EO at Universal studios (dates me, I know this) and some dumb Goosebumps thing at Sea World starring Christopher Lloyd. Despite these two setting the 3-D bar quite low for me, Beowulf was amazingly well done.

And I don't care that Grendel's mother wasn't supposed to be hot - she's hot and golden and nakie here. No complaints. :D

    @ Saber,

She is shown (vaguely) in her true form a few times, and she's ugly then. She changes shape to the hot lady to attract human mates, evidently - or so it goes in this version. It wouldn't be very believable otherwise.

    @ Sir Belly,

Yes, go see it in an I-Max 3D. It'll be a whole new ballgame for you.

Saw it last night in a non-IMAX and non-3D. I wasn't a tad impressed. Cinematic advancement? I think the old Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was a tad better. While the scenery, the lighting and shadows, the ambiance of the mead hall and A. Jolie's cave, and A. Jolie naked was good. But facial expressions and movements where flat and unnatural. Makes me wonder what's the point in animating it. I mean, it's not leaps and bounds compared to Final Fantasy or the Polar Express. As for the story, it's not true to the poem (but what movie was ever true), still it's just acceptable, it doesn't makes me feel that Beowulf was such a great hero. It's not compelling at all, I couldn't even sympathize with any of the characters.

Bottom line, I might be entertained a bit with the 3D version but I think I'd still come out with the same gripes.

It's not out yet over here, but I'm interested in seeing how they adapted it. Three more days to go!

I'm with Sir Belisarius. I loved it. It was an exciting, entertaining movie. They took some liberties with the story but that's ok. I don't know much about computer animation, but I thought the animation was pretty damn good. Anyway, I would recommend the movie.

If you're going to see it, see it at an IMAX. Otherwise don't bother.

It's essentially 300, only with less stupidity and less violence. In other words, a watered down 300. If that sounds appealing, go see it. At an IMAX.

I saw it in 3D, and it was good but ... so obviously Hollywoodised. I haven't read the poem, but it certainly looks and feels like they cheesed it up for movie audiences, which is a shame because it did a lot to detract from the feel of it.

Saw it last night. It never ceases to amaze me how a great hero can screw up when faces with a beautiful woman. I don't feel so bad now...
