first of all, soloing isn't much fun since you don't have any npc interaction. Just walk, slash, walk, slash. Or spells for a magic user.

As for soloing sorcerers or monks are really good choices for a powerful character.

You have named the most interesting ones: elven fighter-mage-thief, gnomish illusionist-thief, halfling or elven fighter-thief and ranger-cleric.
Sorcerers are also considered useful (though I never tried one). I dislike monks - they are so overpowered that they are IMO incredibly boring top play.

Monks aren't really that overpowered I think, my level 26 kensai has 4 attacks per round, with a thac0 of -20 on one hand and -17 on the other (XP cap of ToB).

While my monk at a simillar level has 4 attacks too but like a thac0 of -4. The only good thing about monks is their high AC, but their poor HP brings them down.

I am currently soloing with a Kensai, and he is utterly invincible with the boots of speed and dual wielding Celestial Fury and the Crom Faeyr (almost assembled).

My friends think that he is overpowered, but if you want a challenge, just set the difficulty level higher.

Soloing is pretty boring tho... I miss Minsc and boo =(
