I first entered the Tower on my first trek down south, just after completing the mines. I couldn't get past the 4 sins guys so i left and did the rest on the way to candlekeep - i found the items were worth it at that point, later on they might be a bit worthless.

I usually do it either before or after escaping Candlekeep and returning to city.

There's some tough stuff down there, so going down early is a waste. For me, I have considered doing it right after Cloakwood, but Baldur's Gate is such an XP bonanza that I usually can't resist doing some of the easier quests there before doing Dulag's tower. So I usually start chapter 5, then do the tower, and then finish chapter 5.

I do it in two parts.

The top half when my mage gets to level 3 so I get the protection from petrification spell.
I like getting that tome and the few other nice items you get in the upper part asap.

It's tough going at level 3-4 but when you leave you are level 5. ;)

I save the lower part until Chapter 6 or 7 when my levels are maxed, or almost maxed out.

Although if I'm feeling brave, and there is room in my inventory, I clear part of the first lower level on my first trip.
