Absolutely. Just make sure you download the patch to fix the "X appears busy" bug and you're good to go.

Not quite! You'll also need to:
    - update graphic card driver
    - update sound card driver
    - disable EAX

I have installed BG2 on my Armada 110 Notebook with Win XP, and even that I do not have a special display driver for it, the generic one works Ok. I have had no problems, except for the mentioned "busy" bug.

Honestly, I had no need to update any drivers or disable anything. The only problem I had was the "X appears busy" and the patch took care of that quite nicely.

Then you probably already had updated drivers.
    These are all preventive measures...
Not updating them can cause problems.
It doesn't have to cause them.

    About the "busy" bug...

I was playing SoA on a portable cpu when in vacation, and I couldn't connect to the internet (dunno why). When the "appears busy" bug shows up, I simply save the game and reload... it seems to always work.
