    Click New Game > choose mage as a protagonist > you get to select 8 (I think) spells to start the game with and Find Familiar is one of them ;)

    The spell isn't available in the original Baldur's Gate so you'll have to wait until you get to BG2 and get it at its available places in BG2. Unless (as others have posted), you pick it at character creation.
