OK, so here's the deal. I have to use my other computer right now because my main one for some reason deleted some of it's own neccessary windows files after running a program to patch my version of Counter-Strike. I cannot get into Windows and it will not detect either of my CD drives. What I'm looking for is some kind of command to restore my old backup registry settings/files of Windows from simple Dos mode. Does anybody know how I can fix this problem?

BTW, Why does this have to happen on my birthday of all days? ...The day I get my CD burner... hmm... connection, maybe? I doubt it; but, Windows did become quite unstable right after I installed my burner.

About the problem i have no idea how you can fix it, i guess you have to install windows again and start re-building your hard drive all over again!

You can't edit (restore) registry from DOS command prompt.

Reinstall Windows and kick out those lame (non-RPG) games!

I guess it depends on your operating system but....

Have you tried to start windows in safe-mode?
If you can do that, go in and uninstall whatever the offending program was that caused the problem. Otherwise, as Extremist said, just reinstall Windows (what a pain)

 

If you have Windows ME, you may be able to access system restore. I had to do that on my system after my kids messed it up.

First of all, all all I did was run a patch. Secondly, I can't eve get into safe-mode. I know a hell of a lot about computers, and I've never seen anything like this before. The only thing I can even think to do is to make a boot disk from this computer, and use it one the other computer to reinstall windows and salvage up whatever is left on my HD. I knew I could do that, but I was just hoping that there might be an easier way to fix everything. It won't even let me format C:. Not all the commands are even loaded in Dos. It really really bites.

Forgot to say, I'm running Windows 98. And it says that it's missing files like Himem.sys and that there are some errors to my config.sys. Seriously, my computer was working totally fine until this happened.

can't you override the config.sys with the config from the computer you're currently using.
I would delete the folders program files, and windows98, and do a reinstall.

Screw it all to hell. I just reformated. I just lost about 10 gigs worth of games, movies, and other irreplacable stuff including D&D campaigns that I've been working on.

I tried reinstalling windows, but even that was screwed up. It kept locking up and was acting really really wierd. I seriously think I must have ran a mad virus of the likes I've never seen through my system. The only thing I could do was reformat.

Darien: I'm not sure if I'll be able to host that campaign since most of it was on my Hard Drive. Sorry.

Well, it's done and I'm back up. It just sucks that I'll have to rewrite a ton of stuff and find all the old stuff I had. I'm surprised it only took me a little over an hour to get back up.

BTW, BTA: I know, I had planned to back everything up once I got my burner. The problem was that the same day I get it, I lost everything and only had the chance to back up one movie (American Beauty) and one game (black & White). I told myself "Relax, it's like the same thing when you got your cable. You'll have some time to back things up. You can do it any time." HAH!!! Well, at least I have all the Black Isle games and many other hours worth of games, so there's no big loss there except for the saved games.

However, I'm still having a little problem opening picture files up. If I try to open one, it lags, and I have to give it the 3-finger solute to get out of it locking up. Just another hasstle.

I guess for the most part, it's just a big pain in the butt. Thanks for everyone's concern though.

 

Why do cmputers always brake down? I have the same problem except my computer is really screwd up. First it would start for about an hour after you shut it down (this is really a pain in the butt if you have to restart your computer). I just thought that it maybe was just the heat. Now, it doesn't start at all. Well, I am letting a pro examin it but that is gonna take a few weeks and now I have to read the forums on a computer with internet going really slow.

So, computers are fun as long as they work, and if they don't you just want to throw them out of a window.

 

I guess the lesson to be learned is:

1. Always try to back things up.

2. Keep it simple. Only rely on the games that you buy, not the ones you download.

P.S. I still don't know why my computer locks up every time I try to open up any picture file. I can open it in Adobe Photoshop, but that does me no good if I want to make it my background.

 

vile i strongly suggest that you get a restore disk, these are disk when run restore all vital autoexec files and the like. they have restore disks for almost all the different operating systems, and they should come with your computer along with an install disk for the os you're using. strange that you don't have one.
