BioWare's Georg Zoeller says the company isn't working on a Baldur's Gate right now. He doesn't know more than what Atari shared in a printmag announcement. Here's what he says:

I think Atari announced in some printmag they are doing BG3, but I don't know more than that. I'm sure they'll have an official announcement about it. BioWare, at this time, is not working on a BG game.

Wonder if Atari is going to ask them to work on it when they move on to a more advanced stage.

Read the whole thing at BioWare.

No comments on this? I'd say that this means we can kiss goodbye getting anything on the same level with the other BG titles, so definitely big news...

Bioware created Baldur's Gate as a stand alone universe and later got licensed by Wotc right? Was Bioware not smart enough to at least have a part of the rights of Baldur's Gate or was it legally impossible. And if so why does Atari (can't say anything positive about them) have the sole right and can pick any producer they want. Atari's all about the cash if they just give this cherished title away to any other than baldur's gate.

I must say, that I was about to comment on this, but I thought that it was so obvious that it didn't need to be stated.

    Guess I were wrong then.

Also, my screen resolution was screwed up so the topic first only displayed as "BioWare Doesn't Know Much"

    Made me lol a bit.

Atari is the publisher and holds PC implementation rights. Thus developers of D&D games have to deal with Atari. WotC still holds all rights to the original content, rules, setting and the like. BioWare only holds the copyright of the games themselves.

Guess Obsidian isn't the developer, given the guys already have KotOR 2 and NWN 2 to make. If neither Obsidian, nor BioWare, then I have to agree with Tal that the prospect looks bleak ;)
