I'd like to quote a fellow SP'er here, Death Rabbit, from a thread in the Baldur's Gate forum
I thought there were some, but never really paid attention to it.
So, what are the references to literary figures you've noticed?

Hmm, that spider thing in BG mentioned Icarus, though that's all I can think of.

Well, I can remember Viccy saying something like "You are adrift in a river of denia", which I think is a literary ref... or something like that.

I remember the following names from Planescape Torment, which refer to historical or mythological persons:
Phineas: The clairvoyant who told Jason how to go to Colchid.
Tiresias: The blind clairvoyant of greek mythology, who participates in many myths of the ancient Greeks.
Nestor: The mythical king of Pylos, who was consider to be the wisest of the greek warlords in the war of Troy.
Cassius: One of the murderers of Julius Caesar.

The entire Marlow\Lich quest in Amkethran (BG2) is a massive bit on Faust - both C.Marlowe's version and the original German version.

This guy Charon in the sewers of Neverwinter in NWN is named after the ferryman who brings the dead over the river Styx to Hades. Greek mythology as well.

Fortunatly, he is to lazy to ferry the PC. ;)

Hrothgar in IWD. The whole Icarus/Irenicus bit. If you count FR books, Drizzt and Elminister.

    Just remembered another -

Xzar has a line in BG1 - "Duuuh - Tell about the rabbits" -- blatant reference to Lenny in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.

Cyrando and Garrick in the Temple District in BG2 (you know, where he's trying to woo - ineptly - the lady paladin). Very obvious reference to Cyrano de Bergerac.

Recently, I've had that strange impression that Jaheira was somewhere there, before.
