Ok, this one takes a bit of explaining:

I started playing BG1 with the patch and the ToSC expansion, as a druid (I know I'm a glutton for punishment). Naturally, with the expansion the weapon of choice for the Druid is the scimitar, so he buys one at the Inn at Candlekeep. Eventually he and Imoen meet up with Khalid and Jaheria, and they adventure around a bit. Here's where the trouble starts...

the Druid breaks his scimitar over a Hobgoblin! So he's stuck with a sling, and no proficient weapons that he can find or buy to replace the scimitar, unless he wants to go for a few levels with no melee weapon. So the low-level party has to go to Ulgoth's Beard to buy a plain non-magical scimitar, but they can't get past the Ankhegs north of the Friendly Arm Inn. So the druid dumps everyone out of the party, takes a potion of invisibility, walks past the Ankhegs, and proceeds to Ulgoths beard.

He buys the scimitar, and decides to solo the zombie killing quest in the adjoining area, and he levels up to level 3 (Incidently he broke that scimitar as well and had to go BACK to Ulgoth's Beard again!). So once he returns (this time with a spare scimitar!) and reconnects with the party.

Here's the bug now, when the Druid left the group, Khalid was Level 1 with about 60xp. When he rejoined the group he was level 4 with 8,000xp!! In addition to that, all of his equipment defaulted back to the basic stuff that he has when you first find him!

None of the other characters leveled up in my absence, so evidently Khalid had some good freelance work to do in his spare time!

Hmmm. If I had to guess about what happened, I'd say you talked to Jaheira in the Friendly Arm Inn and Khalid joined automatically. Then when you came back from Ulgoth's Beard, you talked to Khalid to get him to join back and the game thought this was the first time you talked Khalid into joining, and so adjusted him to your level like it usually does when an NPC first joins your party.

As an interesting post script to the Khalid bug in my game, I had dumped Khalid and Jaheira after the Nashkel mines, along with Xan. The 3 of them were in Nashkel, on that main road next to the bounty collector.

The last time I went through Nashkel, Khalid and Jaheira were gone! It was just Xan standing there by himself. I guess they had something better to do than wait around for me to show up again, ha.

That's indeed an interesting addition. BTA's story can be right for a part, the idea is good, but Khalid is not exact the same as when he'll join you, I'm sure he's not level 4 at that moment. That level he had most likely when you kicked him out of the party, in Nashkel Mines. So didn't the game 'think': "Ah, Khalid rejoins the party" and just put hem back like he was at the moment that you kicked him out of the party?

At least, the story how they join the pary isn't right, you can talk to both and the same dialogue will appear, not one talks but first Jaheira and Khalid have a conversation and Jaheira as the Emancipated girl offers to join the party. But it's not interesting to who you talk first in FAM.

And finally: What patches (TOSC) do you have installed? :)

Headbanger, its BG with the first patch, and ToSC with nothing added on, although from what I could tell, putting ToSC in accomplishes the same fixes as the first Bioware patch anyway.

I suppose it doesn't matter now anyway, they're gone for good (I guess). Odd thing about them joining though, I could only talk to Jaheira. Khalid only did his voice soundset when he was clicked on, no dialog was initiated. But to clarify the original problem (well it wasn't really a problem per say) was that I had dumped him at first level, and picked him back up at fourth level.
