[IMG] I have a family member getting into some trouble on-line, and was wondering if you all might have a solution.

He needs to be able to surf the web, but also we need to block off a few sites where he is spending too much time and money. (you probably can guess the *sort* of trouble he's in)

Is there a way to block, limit or monitor access to one or two websites?

It has to be software based, free would be great but at this point I'm willing to pay some to help him out of this addiction.

As always, thanks in advance for your help.
    :good:

    Try SurfControl CyberPatrol (www.cyberpatrol.com).
I'm sure its not the only solution but it was the first I found and looks as though it will do all you want and more for a reasonable price ($39).

Morgoth, he uses a laptop when he goes to school, so a hardware based solution won't work :(

(I bought the laptop for the kid and he's doing this stuff .... grrrr)

Why don't you just check his history after he has used it and see what he's been doing, unless he deletes it. Also if you are using Internet Explorer you can go to the site he is "visiting" and click the [tools] tab and then click [block this page].

NoAds from southbaypc.com allows you to treat any window you have (I've only seen one or two that refused to die) with the almighty 'add to targets' option. It adds the culprit to your black list (mine is 14KB long) and closes it on sight. It's more than easy to disable once someone has figured out it's right beside his taskbar clock though.

How savvy is he? I'm not sure it will work...

There are plenty of products out there that limit access to certain types of websites. However, there are so many ways to circumvent those restrictions that they are worthless against anyone over a certain level of computer-skill.

Even if there were pieces of software that were totally impossible to circumvent, you'd find he'd use someone else's machine, an internet cafe, whatever, to satisfy his addiction.

My suggestion is to help him with deal with the addiction itself, not the medium through which it's delivered.

I doubt you'll be able to find something that he can't shut off in a few seconds.

I suggest you go to web attack find a freeware internet site blocker create a new account on the computer make this account power user or user (you can set up what rights he can have) go to the administrator account put the programm in and put a password to that he doesn't know so he can't erase the programm and there problem must be solved

    [IMG] Thanks for the suggestions.

We are talking about it, but its rough on they guy. He needs the computer for school and a few work projects, so he can't stay away from it completley, but when he's on and it gets late or he gets depressed .... he's on that site.

I was hoping that if he had to disable something everytime or do some work around...it might be enough to get some of the temptation away. As it is night now, his fingers just automatically type in the site name. If his brain goes on idle, its almost automatic to go there.

Well if it aint a porn site, something I guess every teenager are sneak peaking at... How come it's bad? I always tend to think, when I look back to my early years. If you are interested about something explore it. If you are depressed about something, damn the net is great it lets you know that you are not alone! a forum like this is grand for such avents. One thing I know though, cut information off completely will make atleast my brain go inside and I will shut down completely and just go on inside my brain. Thinking about the things I'm not supposed to think about. Talk about it explore it do what ever you like just don't pretend that it aint there when It certenly IS.
