NWVault has interviewed bobcat, the author of a Hall of Fame persistent world called Mossbourne. Here's an excerpt:

    3) Your Persistent World is called "Mossbourne" was recently inducted into our Hall of Fame. Could you give us an overview of what it's all about and the unique setting you have.
I'd hate to try and pigeon hole it into any single category. Originally, Greg and I battled over the design alot. He was pushing for more of a “Zelda-esque” world. When we started, the idea was to make a module you'd play to it's end, and then leave. Only, no one left. LOL. Eventually, I exported every single area we had, ripped out everything that felt “arcade-ish”, and then laid out the world so that you have a King and a Castle in the east, and the Quest items he sends you to collect in the west, with the start location in the middle. This creates alot of traffic back and forth so new players are always running into each other. I named the new world “Mossbourne” and Greg went on with Gabda.
Later on, I figured out I really wanted to place the world where it belonged.... In Faerun. It took three days of staring at the Forgotten Realms Campaign map before I finally found a place to overlay Mossbourne onto Faerun. So we're now in the Dalelands. It's my goal now to bring as much F&R design and lore into the world as is possible. To this end, I've been building into the world the official “War of the Spider Queen” module. It's about 60% done, and making slow progress. Once you find the Underdark, it'll take you many many hours to traverse it. You could literally play Mossbourne for oh, 20 or 30 hours and never cross the same map twice. Providing you never died that is. In one of the temples in the woods you can get transported to another plane, one based on elements (Fire, Ice etc...). This is Johnny and Dionnah's world within a world. So Mossbourne has aspects of all that in it. There's shards to collect, a Princess to rescue, an other worldly plane with it's own story, and the Underdark with it's own story.
