These "Boots of Speed" could be obtained by wiping out party in the sewers under Temple District if I remember correctly.

Equipped on character they make haste icon appear on characters portrait as if he/she was hasted. Which means that charcter movement rate and number of attacks must double.
The problem is that movement speed really doubles, and visually seems that character attacks twice as fast as he did without boots, BUT somehow when you look into the stats window number of attacks stat is the same as without boots. (If hasted by ordinary spell this stat number doubles)

Where is the truth? Is it a bug? Do number of attacks doubles (as visually seen) or remains the same (as stats declare) with Boots of Speed equipped?

I don't know whether it was a bug or a deliberate decision to not give them all the bonuses you expect (even without I find them pretty useful to get to mages quickly). Anyway, there is a patch available that adresses some of the missing benefits by, and I quote:

"Improved Boots Of Speed Fix resolves the three known issues with the Boots Of Speed (haste doesn't increase attacks, doubled initiative round leaves chars. wasting their attack windows, and invisible chars. become visible before attacking due to the doubled initiative round.) Now Beige Tangerine has made them even better by correcting the movement rate increases for Monks and Barbarians so that they receive the same benefits!"

    You can get this from:

Thanks Slappy, but I would suggest You to be cautious in posting links to this patch page. Some guys have experienced strange behavior of BG2 after installing these patches...

I don't think they're intended to give double attacks. Just because they use the haste icon doesn't mean it's the real thing. If it was they would be one of the most powerful objects in the game. Personally I think they behave as intended.

    SPOILER ahead

The "first" set of boots come from the Astral Prison and not the sewers.

As far as I know it's been the same in both BG1&2 and IWD. Boots of speed only improve your running speed, not your number of attacks. I believe it even says something to that effect in their discription or in the manual. It's not a bug that needs to be "fixed". Perhaps there's a bug where it shows the character attacking more often than they should when wearing them, but I haven't really noticed it.

    [IMG] RTFM! :(

    Haste gives one extra attack/round
    Improved Haste doubles attacks/round.

    Kasio:
Don't post a spoiler without warning! This goes even when the spoiler posted is - unwittingly - false.

[IMG] Well, it goes for Zorac too, but Kasio started the topic so he should have posted a spoiler alert since his post included a - albeit erroneous - spoiler.

AFAIK the boots of speed just increase your movement speed to the factor you have when you´re hasted - zthey don´t effect the number of attacks.

They are great to bring a strong melee fighter to the enemy quickly or a weak char away from the enemy fast .... that´s how I use them.

I remember someone saying that the boots actually give 1/2 extra attack (improved initative maybe). But I haven't actually checked it out.

And Earl Grey, judging you from your post I can't really say that I'm particularly sorry to have spoiled your fun. If I spoiled anyone else I'm sorry.

But the problem is in what you see.

Take a look on you char with boots of speed, he not olny moves twice as fast but also swings his weapons if as if he was hasted.

Take a look... How could this be? Lets equip char with low thac0 with these boots and see how your enemy oozes blood twice as much as he should.... And dies twice as fast...

Actually the two pairs of boots of speed that i know of are
    1) on the thief in the astral prison in the Haer' Dalis(sp) quest.

    2) from the boot machine in the maze for 15 Mirthril tokins.

I know both of these are correct, dont try to tell me they arn't i have both pairs.

[IMG] As has been said here by some posters the Boots of Speed doubles your movement but does not give you any extra attacks.
(I tested this by observing the To Hit rolls in autopause at end of round mode.)

    Zorac:
Not warning about spoilers is just thoughtless so reminding people about it may improve the forum. I've played BG2 so much spoilers don't concern me directly but in other games I would not like to be surprised by them.

I see now that my outburst ("rtfm") was uncalled for and I apologize for that to anyone who may have taken offense from it. Sorry.

The item locations are correct and the character fighting with double speed is just for looks. Kinda stupid to script new animations just for one item.

Why do you think new animation scripts should be made?
Just take the one from NON-hasted character! Why take one from hasted char? bwah!
    What a new scripts?

The boots are great. Not only are they awesome in combat (closing speed is key), but they are useful in towns as well.
When I need to talk to someone or get an item in a shop that does not require the whole party, I just leave them at the entrance to the area and haul ass across the map with my BoS guy. It makes errand running quicker.

I like to use the boots to send my thief ahead to scout for traps. Then if they have an encounter they can get the bad guys to chase them back to where I have my main party set up in ambush. BTW Baldurdash has a patch that takes the haste icon off since the boots are only supposed to give doubled movement speed.

I like to put boots of speed on Minsc & Keldorn, so they can run into the fray and hack n' slash to left n' right.

When the rest of my party gets there, half of the enemies are usually slaugthered

For some reason, i noticed that when u equip the boots of speed and have a fraction number of attacks such as 9/2, 7/2 5/2, etc... then it get boosted up to the next whole number ie 10, 8, 6, etc...
