    [​IMG] @ Nakia: :lol: That reminds me of the time I was on holiday in Austria: the tour guide on one of our coach trips was doing his spiel, initially in German, and then did the translation, for the "benefit of all our English guests". A red-haired moustachioed fellow near the front glowered over his half-moon spectacles and bellowed: "and Scottish!". The guide flinched, and then proceeded to name every other English-speaking country he could think of and how welcome they all are, just to be on the safe side! :shake:

    Oh, and don't forget that Wales is a principality anyway, not a proper country. They get most upset if you don't grasp this subtlety. ;) :p

    Many Americans have found the British very polite during their visits. Even Ben Franklin discovered how polite the British could be:

    Once during his stay in England, Franklin discovered he was dining in the same inn as Edward Gibbon, author of the _Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire_. Franklin asked politely if Gibbon would give him the pleasure of his company. Gibbon replied, politely that as much as he would like to, he was still a loyal subject of the king and would not sit with a "rebel." Franklin returned the favor, again politely, that it was too bad that Gibbon would not join him, because he could have supplied him many documents when "Mr. Gibbon came to write his account of the decline and fall of the British Empire." Turnabout is always fair play it seems.
