Which will you (or someone else) choose, when it's time? I would want cremation, because I think cemeteries are a waste of space.

I would rather my corpse was fed to animals of some kind. Any animal is fine, as long as I'm not alive to feel it of course. It's the natural way of things, I'd not have what resources there is in me to be selfishly burned into nothing, while some being out somewhere is suffering of starvation.

Theologically, I have issues with cremation. Given that I believe that Man is made in the image of God, doing unnecessary violence to the body is disrespecful.

But on the other hand, the body decomposes, worms eventually get in and crawl around, and that's just disgusting, so I wouldn't be averse to a cremation -- vermin doesn't have much interest in ashes, and I'd be on the mantelpiece -- reminding my wife not to date anyone else!

Personally I don't particularly care what happens to my body after I die, I will be done using it at that point anyways. I don't particularly mind my body feeding worms and maggots but I am not so fond of them that that would cause me to favour burial. I guess if I had to make the decision I would choose cremation but solely because it would avoid the cost of buying a coffin, a plot, tombstone etc. That way the living who will receive whatever (if anything) that makes up my estate will have more to spend on more important things.

My preference doesn't matter. Funerals are for the living, not the dead, and I'll allow the people I leave behind to determine if they'd prefer a headstone or an urn as my memorial.

But I happen to agree that cemetaries are misused space.

I'm with Foradasther. I'd rather be eaten. :D

Why be so selfish? When we live in a world where cannibal children are malnurished! I just wanna do my part.

[IMG] I have this weird (= rare) idea of burial without coffin, to under a large oak, somewhere behind the back of god (all of them). Maybe a nice grave-stone to tell that someone actually rest 'here.'

The idea of waking up underground, of being buried alive, is absoloutely abhorrant to me. I cannot imagine anything worse than the inside of a coffin six feet under. I therefore, out of plain fear, am going to be cremated.

Until the 1950s, Tibetans disposed of their dead by taking the body up a hill, hacking it into little pieces, and feeding the remains to the birds.

    A little off topic but..

I really don't know what I would, guess my kids can choose that.

Or if I were famous, I would choose a beatiful place in nature (perhaps under a oak like Virne says) and a memorial stone. Then someone might come and drink on my grave and that would make me kinda happy in the afterlife. That I was to use for someone.

I agree with Virne. Under an oak, without coffin and just a stone to indicate that someone is buried here. But I don't think this would happen, so a normal burial is still ok.

I want to be buried, with my hand sticking out of the ground so people can shake it as they go by :D .

This reminds me of the line Red Forman said at a party. "When I die, I want to be buried face down, so that anyone who doesn't like me can kiss my butt!" [sanitized for SP readers]

    Sir Belisarius.

No, soylent green or red or yellow is too gross! How about soylent blue?

    Soylent = soya / lentil I think?

    Wasn't that a dumb movie?

Harry Harrison's classic novel "Make Room! Make Room!" was made into a movie called "Soylent Green". The substance in question was actually recycled humans and was used to feed the living since food supplies were shot. People didn't KNOW that the stuff was dead people.

Heh, I was thinking soilent (soy-lentil?) green too ;)

My wife demands to be cremated, and I know that if I kick it first, she'll burn my remains down and flush them.

I, on the other hand, am a sentimental sap, and would do the full funeral plus cemetary plot so I could visit it and bring her favorite flowers (choking up thinking about it).

For my daughter ... lets not think about that.

[IMG] Burial, It's a religious thing. Even though I'm not always that religious.
