Yeah, this is an interesting one. He only needed another 50 runs to get to a big milestone, but I guess players usually know when the right time to retire is. In order to play international sport, it requires so much time and commitment off the field to stay fit – and Chris Cairns hasn’t exactly been the fittest player during what has been an injury-ravaged career. I think if he carried on, he would have just been waiting around for the next injury to come along and end his career for him.

He will be a loss to the team, as much for his charisma and star power as for his cricket skills.

It’s amazing to think that he made his debut way back in 1989. I wonder what greatness he could have achieved if he could have actually stayed fit throughout the last 17 years. Unfortunately, his career has more been one of “what could have been?” as he has missed more matches than he has played in.

The most amazing thing for me about his career was the record for hitting the most sixes in test cricket. That record has recently been equalled by Adam Gilchrist but I am astonished that he could have hit more than people like Ian Botham, Viv Richards, and Brian Lara who all have a lot more runs than him and weren’t afraid of taking the long handle to the bowlers.

He will be missed I've always enjoyed watching him and his father (Lance) play, hopefully you'll find someone to replace him HB soon.
