[IMG] Ok, I love this game but it still has a way of pissing me of cause I can't seem to get round this @~"£$% 'to hit' system.
I went into the options and turned on the 'display to-hit rolls' option, so that I could see all of the hit rolls, heres what I found. Edwin has got one point in the Dagger and Quaterstaff prof. When I equip the dagger and attack someone he's got a +1 to his hit roll, when I equip the Staff he gets a +4 to his hit roll - why is this? - both weapons were standard normal weapons, no magical abilities no bonus's attacthed to them. I DON'T UNDERSTAND !
Pleeeease can someone help me get my head round this.

    Thanks

    Telex

(ps - I was attacking Minsc (party AI off))

I replied to your e-mail this morning when I got up, hopefully it was easy to understand being 6am and all ;)

Anyhow, I thought I'd do a repost here for those wondering as well.

Any weapon in BG2 have a bonus and negative modifier when it comes to hitting a person wearing armor.

    Slashing
    Piercing
    Bludgening

Depending on the weapon you are using and the armor the beast, creature or NPC you are fighting, certain "THACO" ('to hit') bonuses and negatives will be applied.

Slashing and Pierching weapons (swords, daggers, etc.,) give you a +1 or +2 bonus to your THACO when fighting creatures with leather armor, studded leather amror or in general have a soft exterior. Using the same weapon on someone who is wearing Plate or Full Plate will give you a negative 'to hit', sometimes from -1 to -4.

Now because you were using a dagger and received a +1 bonus vs using a Quarter Staff and received a +4 bonus, that tells me that Minsc was wearing very solid armor, where a Bludgening weapon such as a Quarterstaff, Mace, Flail, etc would receive a 'to hit' bonus.

These bonuses can be viewed from your character portrait, I think right after the saving throw or before them. These numbers will change depending on the weapon you are using and reflect what your THAC0 bonus is for slashing, piercing and bludgening.

If Minsc was wearing no armor, then I have no idea :)
