Signed! Peter Jackson as first choice and Tim Burton as second. It would be interesting what Tim Burton could do with the Hobbit, he is good at making fantastic things.

The major problem with filming the Hobbit is J.R.R. Tolkien's estate. Evidently, surviving family members were none-too-happy about the making of the films. They felt that there were too many deleted parts. (Funny, everyone else seemed to like them.) Anyway, the Tolkien estate did not do anything to protect the movie-making rights of any of the books, so the making of the Lord of the Rings was possible. Sensing the possibility of a prequel, they have since been making strides to acquire the movie making rights to the Hobbit. If they should succeed, then they can choose that the movie not be made...

This is what the petition says....

    To: New Line Cinema
This is a petition to ask New Line Cinema to acquire the rights for making a live-action version of "The Hobbit" and to ask one, of three, directors to direct the movie: Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, or George Lucas. Once completed it is my intent to send this to New Line Cinema, either my E-mail, or standard postal service. Please sign it and be heard!

    Sincerely,

    The Undersigned

    -------------------------------------------

It doesn't say anything about choosing alternative Directors other than the three named.

George Lucas? He is joking, right?

The hobbit is a children's story, and Lucas could present it as such and make the movie very cheaply into the bargin, but is that what anyone actually wants?

If Peter Jackson does the Hobbit movie then I hope he replaces the not-so-scary-because-you-are-only-wee style of the book with his own interpretation of the tale as seen through the eyes of a fifty year old hobbit. He has Revenge, Murder, Imprisonment, Greed, Betrayal and All Out War to play with, he shouldn't waste it.

Of course if he doesn't use hobbit sized actors to play hobbits and dwarf sized actors to play dwarves then I won't be going to see it anyway, some memories aren't to be corrupted so lightly.

As I posted in another thread, the current problem with bringing "The Hobbit" to your local cineplex is not with the Tolkien estate. The movie rights to "The Hobbit" were sold long ago, and are being held by United Artists. It is entirely between New Line / Peter Jackson and United Artists. If you want this petition to mean anything, it needs to be addressed to New Line, and each signee should include 1 US Dollar (no Euros, please)

The day that I hear George Lucas will direct "The Hobbit" (or perhaps, "There and Back Again"), will be the day that I schedule myself for a volontary full frontal lobotomy.

Oh, BTW, Jackson starts "King Kong" in April, which will have a 2005 release. The very soonest we could see a Jackson / New Line "Hobbit" would be Christmas 2006.

Signed! Stuff Spielberg and Lucas, it should be helmed by Jackson or Burton. But hey, it'll probably never get made anyway.

[IMG] Signed! First choice Jackson, second choice Martin Scorsese. I'd like to see the dwarves in Goodfellas-style with Joe Pesci as Thorin. He'll make an excellent a$$-kicking dwarf... :D

J.R.R. Tolkien sold the complete movie rights for LOTR for 10'000 £ as he had financial problems. The Estate had no say in anything about the film nor has seen any money from it. The evil rumour is, that's why the head of the estate is so unhappy and has seemingly denied everything which he could.

Personally, I think the coming of the Hobbit to the cinemas is sure. But I wonder if the head of the Tolkien Estate will first have to change ?
