I've long regarded the Senate as a useless pile of flotsam and jetsam. Now this, which has been front and center in Canadian news for a while now:

    http://www.hilltimes.com/news/news/...nate-harper-government/35321?page_requested=1

There's a lot of questions about what the exact nature of the $90,000 payment was. Interesting to note that Duffy quit co-operating with the Senate expenses audit the very instant that he received the payment, which put up the hairs of the audit committee.

The sad part is that it may result in the downfall of at least a couple of then rising stars.

Nigel Wright was regarded as incredibly intelligent, and with a bright future ahead of him where the sky was the limit. Future PM? But the RCMP alleges that he attached conditions of silence to the $90,000 repayment.

Ben Perrin He was making a big name for himself (hailed as a hero by the US State Department) for his life long work on human trafficking. Rumors had been going around that he was gearing up for a political career as well.

Of course, allegations have to be treated as exactly that until they're proven. But all I got to say is, wow ...

The Senate is a joke. It is a disgraceful, fundamentally undemocratic institution that reeks of elitism, corruption, and cronyism. It is a zit -- nay, a boil, on Canada's tush.

Duffy should be ashamed of himself, and all of those Liberal Senators in there criticizing him need to thoroughly purge their own skeletons from their closets before they spout off any more. Because Canadians are not stupid. We KNOW they are all lined up at the trough, hogging out at our expense and providing little of value to us.

I would cheerfully support all of these f*****s booted out of the chamber with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Then we could elect our Senators and institute some other reforms that would ensure our taxes actually go to the public weal rather than the pockets of dried up relics who don't give a flying !@€¥ about the struggles of the average hardworking Canadian.

As for the PMOs office, so much for transparency and accountability. I get that addressing Social conservative issues is not high on Harper's list, and I can live with that, but if he's not even going to behave like a conservative in fiscal matters, I'll be taking my vote elsewhere. Maybe the Rhino Party.

Well, LKD pretty much sums up my thoughts on the Senate. Duffy is, IMO, just a more extreme example of what goes on in the Senate (and politics in general, actually).

Nigel Wright, as smart as he supposedly is, was pretty stupid for getting involved in this.

I love how, when the Duffy story first broke, his comment to reporters was something like "do some real reporting". Yeah, like he wouldn't have done the same thing. And as it turns out, they were doing "real" reporting.

And even if charges aren't laid (I don't know too much about Canadian law) this certainly is touching other officials.
