I bought this game months ago, it plays fine and I even patched it but....

I can't get motivated to play this game, mainly because you only have one character. The furthest I got was the docks area.

I just have no idea what class to pick or how to even imagine multi-classing because I will be stuck with 1 character the whole game.

I don't want an ubercharacter, just a character that I know won't be overwhelmed alone. I really want a sorcerer type but I don't want to be dog meat because I have a huge total of 4hp and AC 10...

Seeking good advice on the most practical and independent (can handle it alone type) character to finish this game.

The only thing I can say is, that if you don't want an overpowered character you shouldn't take a pure mage or sorcerer. Later they become much too strong, and it's really boring to play with them than.

Lol, that's a real good question. How getting motivated to put the NWN OC through. I can't help you, because I couldn't motivate myself enough.

Hm, I personally had fun with an ranger used as archer. It wasn't fun enough to get me to the end, but enough to get me into the second chapter. Than I had a dual-scimitar-wielding-fighter. Fun too, but still not enough to get me through the whole game.

Bottom line: Forget the OC, download some modules.

    My two centimes.

    A couple of things.

You don't have to go it completely alone; you can hire various henchpeople that can complement your character. Though many people didn't like them much, my Ranger had good success with Tomi the thief.

Second, if you really don't want to go it alone or with just a single henchperson, try playing online. I've been having a blast with Belisarius and others on the ALFA servers.

[IMG] Oh yeah!!! ALFA is a good time! I've met up with BTA, Arwen and Gnolyn Lockbreaker in game!!! It's a lot o' fun!

Last night I went into an old dwarven mine that's been taken over by Duergar!!! Oh man, was it a great fight!!! The first ime we went in with 24, and came out with 10. This time we went in with 10 and came out with 9...Much better strategy and tactics!

Who did you backstab so they didn't make it out Bel? Arwen or BTA :)

On topic ... the cool thing about NWN (and 3E rules) is that you get to be whatever you want. (but you know that ;) )

I did the prologue a half-dozen times before I liked my character. I played a Paladin/Cleric, and was able to go it alone most of the time. I had to get the gnome once in awhile for firepower, and took the bard early on because a) she's hot, and b) I couldn't bust open chests.

Minor Spoiler ... there is lots of free healing, so the cleric class isn't crucial. I still had fun with it though.

[IMG] There's plenty o' character death in ALFA without me helping it along...I saw Arwen only once, and she was with 2 sketchy looking cats, so I avoided them.

But playing in a multiplayer persistent world is a really good time! Check it out...You'll thank me later.

It's not worth the effort to try and motivate yourself. I found it quite boring and gave up on it. Finally uninstalled it without having completed the game.
Once you reach the state of mind when you can take the decision to quit it's a relief. It's better to spend your time playing some other game I think.

Thanks for all the input, I think that I will try a fighter/thief and get a spellcaster henchperson. Now the problem of stats...

I made it throught the OC with a monk. I used several skill points on open lock and detect trap, specialized on stealth and persuasion. It's lots of fun to be able to walk into a room, gauge the enemy strength and then, if needed, walk out and buff up before combat. Getting in the first blow with an Improved Knockdown / Stunning Fist is nice too!

I hired Tomi most of the time, but occaisionally took along the cleric or the barbarian for their specialties. Tried hiring the bard as well, but she kept getting herself killed.

I have found that the recommended stats are usually best unless you're planning to multiclass into your major class after lvl 1.

Your best bets for a fighter / thief are human, dwarf, or halfling, unless you plan to keep the levels nearly equal. I'd try something like STR:15, DEX:14, CON:14, INT:12, WIS:10, CHA:12 for a human. I'd make the dwarf about the same, so after racial adjustments he'd have 15, 14, 16, 12, 10, 10. For the halfling, I'd focus more strongly on the DEX, making him an archer/finesse fighter. I'd set him up with 12, 17, 14, 12, 10, 12.

Lately, I've been playing a human bard with a level each of rogue and fighter on my guild's test PW. It offers a nice mix of abilities from many classes: lock picking, traps, better weapon/armor choices, healing spells, summoning spells, buffing spells, and the ability to use most any magic item through the Use Magic Device skill. She can handle many things fairly well, but has lower hit points (~89 at 11th level with Boots of Hardiness) than a fighter-type or cleric-type character. In the OC, that's not usually a problem with all the healing that you can find and the fact that you can rest anywhere and anytime.

The most useful tool in character creation ... the "RECOMMENDATION" button. That helped my stat-set-up tons. I didn't like the skills and feats it picked all the time though.

This is going to sound incredibly silly, but here's why I can't get motivated...

After trying a few different character types, I settled on a Male Elf Fighter and started making my way through the game for the first time. It was great fun. Started off with Tomi as my hench, but ditched him when my STR got above 18 and could bash open pretty much anything. I then took on Linu as my hench for healing and a decent ranged/backup melee character. This character kicked serious boo-tay and I was loving the game.

It was all going great until I neared the end of chapter 2. There was a great weapon store in one of the towns with all these cool unique weapons, where I found an awesome long sword (Blade of the Gladiator). I thought this was so cool, especially since I'd invested all my weapon focus on long swords, and hadn't found anything other than a regular +1 longsword the whole game. Now, once I entered Luskan (?) the first shop I went into I expected to find a new crop of cool weapons, when all it was was an exact copy of the previous store, with the exact same inventory. It was the like the other store just picked up and moved to Luskan, and it pissed me off (I wanted a NEW cool store, dammit!). My Blade of the Gladiator was no longer unique and cool (because there was another one sitting in this store too). So now all weapons in the game ceased to be cool and exciting.

After that, my game was ruined, and I can't really bring myself to play NWN anymore. I can't figure it out. My favorite aspect of RPG's is by far the "stuff" factor: finding new and powerful weapons and armor and using them to increase in power. So because of this, I just can't get past it. Am I completely insane or what? :aww: :hahaerr:

[IMG] Yes you are because most of the interesting stuff I found was in chests etc, not in stores. Though the stores did have quite a few nice things. I used that Gladiator sword all the time. :)

Yeah, maybe I am just being a big dork. After all, I should just buy the other one and dual-wield them. Sha-mo!

See...I would find plenty of cool items in the chests, just NONE of the items I wanted to use, (i.e. longswords). Pissed me off man. Oh well - I'm that far in, I may as well just finish the job. Next time I'm gonna go through with a wizard for sure, with Daelan as my homie. Should be fun.

Yeah, that's one of the problems I found in NWN's official campaign. Almost all the treasure is random, so you never know what you're going to get, or even if you'll ever get some of the really good stuff.

I found the best character to use was a sorcerer/fighter/theif. This way you can cast some spells; fight reasonably well and pick locks.

Who needs a henchman? They just go running off getting them selves killed (IMO).

Ah yes, but while they are busy getting themselves killed, you can pop off another spell or two or fire off a few more arrows. I found that they made a great distraction/cannon fodder.

Your sorcerer/fighter/rogue seems similar to my bard/fighter/rogue.

Yeah cannon fodder is a good idea, but I hate constantly going back to collect my dead mecenery from the temple (or what ever).
