Ug...my CD drives (both of em) have crashed.

On Friday, I simply put my computer onto standby and my computer then made a sound like a cat being scraped to death after being thrown in a food processor. Sorry for the graphic description, but I'm frustrated. After I put the computer back on, it kept reading the main CD drive and kept playing the Warcraft III launcher like three times in a row after I closed it each time (WarIII CD was in there at the time). Cleverly, I removed the WarIII CD because right after I restarted my computer, it would not recognize both CD drives and one of the drives would not open. This means no games for me :( . This computer is barely two years old, so my question is does anyone of you know why the CD drive would suddenly stop working? Is it just simply a faulty part or something...more sinister...?

    Try bios.
Try shutting down for 30 min and then rebooting.
    Check cables.

If none of these work, try if windows knows there is a cd-rom drive.

Did all that, although I'm not sure about what you mean about BIOS? You mean the chip in the motherboard or something?

And I'm sure Windows does not recognize the drives any more.

Yeah, if it was working one day, and it's not the next, then something is amiss.

I don't know if you're using winme or xp, but either way look at the device manager. If it's not even listed, then you probably have to swap out a drive.

The liteon 16x dvd drives are fairly cheap, nowadays. And they are quite fast.

Or at least, compared to other drives out on the market.

    *sniff*

Nothing even comes close to the Kenwood drives. RIP 72x...

ej, you're right, unfortunately. The device manager in WINME (*sigh*) does not recognize them. Thanks for your help, though.

    Check BIOS setup.
    It sometimes helps.

(Usually started while hitting DEL when booting)

Sorry, don't know about computers as much as you.

What should the bios say when I hit delete at bootup?

Try a hammer. That sometimes works.

No, really. If it hadnt have made the noises you described then i would have said it sounds a bit wierd and there may be a hope or getting it to work.

But, after being blended and then scraped to death, there's no chance of saving that kitty kat.

It's normal under Windows and rarely something to do with Bios. Check the cables and plugs, maybe it's plugged too loosely. Removing the device and putting it in again helps in most cases when Windows decides it just doesn't like this particular piece of hardware.

From the grinding noise you have described it sounds like one of your cd drives have died. If you feel comfortable, try disconnecting the data cable(ribbon) from one drive,(when the pc is off of course) then start up and have a look. Repeat again with the other drive only connected with the ribbon cable.

Very likely only one has died, and you could just choose to replace that one, or disconnect it completely.

    Good luck

Try if you can boot your computer from the cd.

    If it boots:
    Windows

    If it does not boot:
    Bios
    Cables
    Luck

I did actually have a ssimilar problem once. Windows knew the drive was there but everytime i had to change disc in BG1, i'd put in the new disc and the drive would think for a couple of moments and then just stop thinking. I'd hit it and keep ejecting/reinserting the disc but nothing. It then started happening with every disc. I think the drive just died, slowly and painfully, rather than your noisey and painfully.

Actually, since I don't have much spare time left to toy around with this petty annoyance, I resolved it the simplest way: bought a new CD drive. It has not only solved my problem, but now my CDs are being read at almost twice as fast what they were before. So this is MY solution. I tried some of your suggestions, but none seemed to be helping.

Well, thanks for trying to assist me in this horrendous disaster. I owe you all.
