[IMG] My cd drive was working fine last night, but when I woke up this morning it wouldn't read the cds I put in it. Could this be a simple driver problem? or Did I disable anything? Im using Windows XP if that helps. I dont know what esle to list. If you need more specs just ask. :help:

When it comes to computer problems, start at the most basic possible problem. I bet your problem is a little particle of dust. I would recomend that you either blow out all the dust in your CD-ROM drive with Dust Off Compressed-Gas Duster stuff, or buy an Endust CD-ROM/player cleaner. :rolling:

You can also go into your device manager and uninstall the cd-rom drive. Then restart windows. When you do, you'll see mesaages about new hardware found. Just follow the instructions and let windows reinstall the cd drive and the driver.

Well, can you give us more info? I mean, in the devices list, and in My Computer is there an entry for it? Have you cracked open your comp and checked if the hardware is all intact and properly wired?

Arg! I could fix it if I could see it and touch it.
    You have three choices:
1.) mail your computer to me, so I can fix it.
2.) pay the postage so I can mail myself to your house...just make sure to pay extra for rush delivery. I'm claustrophobic!!!
3.) take it to a computer repair shop.

I would recommend #3...but I would like to get out of this state, so go with #2. :rolling:

On the line of formatting. The only problem i forsee is that if your cd drive doesn't work then you might not be able to install windows after the format.

Well, why don't you try this. get into the BIOS setup on the startup of your computer and change the boot order to cd-rom -> floppy -> hdd (or whatever your equivalents may be) then try to boot windows, a rescue cd, whatever off a CD. If it works then you can probably eliminate any hardware problems, and you can narrow it down to some software problem.

Im just going to bring the laptop to a local computer store. And see what they can do, but first Ill call Dell and see if im still under the warrenty, so they fix it for free. But then ill have to wait forever to sent it through the mail and etc.

    Could this be it?

How do I configure my Dell™ Inspiron™ portable computer to boot to the CD drive?

    Power on the computer.
When the Dell logo screen appears, press the <F2> key to enter the System Setup.
Press the <Alt> and <P> keys simultaneously to proceed to the second page.
Press the <Down Arrow> key until CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Drive is highlighted.
Press the <U> key until CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Drive is at the top of the list.
Insert the CD-ROM you intend to boot to into the CD drive.
Press the <ESC> key to Save and Reboot.
Your computer will now boot to the CD in the drive.

This is the only thing i havent tried besides formating.. Is this what your talking about, Kitrax??

That's exactly it. You have to make sure you use a bootable CD, mind you. Your XP CD should do nicely. If it boots successfully, you know the drive itself works and that the problem is some setting or other in Windows.
