The name says everything. Is it possible to change the name of your kit? I have Shadowkeeper and Infinity Engine Editor Pro, can it be done with those tools? I've tried with IEEP, using a kit creation guide from old teamBG, but, (strangely because it's worked before) nothing happens. I get my numbers from IEEP:s Dialog.tlk editor, and then I put them in the KITLIST.2DA, but nothing happens

Sorry, I need some clarification. Are you creating a new kit or modifying an existing one? And what exactly do you mean by 'nothing happens'? Does your kit not show up or, if you're just trying to change the name of an existing kit, does it not work? Or something else?

I am modifying an existing kit. I just want to rename the Conjurer to Invoker, because I want to be an Invoker, but with Divination as opposition school. Nothing changes, so The Conjurer remains a conjurer.

That's pretty easy. All you need to do is open up KITLIST.2DA, change the LOWER/MIXED/HELP string references for the Conjurer to the numbers listed further down for the Invoker, and it should work like a charm.

Unfortunately I don't use IEEP, so I can't tell you how to do it with that. You can grab a copy of Near Infinity and try your hand with that if you want; just run it, look up KITLIST.2DA under the 2DA subgroup, and then you should be able to figure it out from there. Or if not I can try to explain it better, heh.

Oh, there's one other way to do it, which is to manually edit the dialog.tlk file. Look up string numbers 2179 and 504 and change them to whatever you want. I don't like changing existing strings in dialog.tlk myself though, it can get a bit exasperating.

That's what I thought too, so I got really surprised when it didn't work. Also, I've been thinking of trying Near Infinity for some time, but I thought it was too complicated, so I used IEEP instead. Is it that complicated, and in that case, are there any good tutorials?

Yeah, it's a very powerful and well-made tool, but you do need to be familiar with the various Infinity Engine filetypes.

Tutorials... honestly I just picked it up as I went along and asked folks when I got confused. But there's a pretty comprehensive description of the files used in kit customisation here .

As for the problem... if you're dead sure you've changed the file properly and the kit names are still exactly as they were before, then it's probably some annoyingly trivial oversight. Double check that the program is saving the changes properly and that the modified file is in your override, maybe. I'm forever panicking over stupid mistakes like that. :)

Are you using custom kit mods or anything of that nature? Anything that would affect your KITLIST.2DA?

I tried to give the Invoker the Conjurers CLAB-file, but still there was no difference. It seems like the changes made doesn't affect the mages

What the... you're right. You can change the name of any other kit that way, but it doesn't work for mage kits, not even the wild mage. In fact now that I think about it, there's no K_M_x.2DA files, either!

Mage kits must be handled differently from other kits. If I had to guess I'd say they're coded as classes rather than kits, since they're from back in BG1 when the framework for kits as they exist in BG2 wasn't around. That doesn't explain why they put a bunch of apparently redundant information in KITLIST.2DA for the mage kits, but oh well... you'll have to resort to modifying your dialog.tlk file, I suppose. That'll still do the trick.

ok, could you please tell me what the original Lower, mixed and help strings for the Conjurer are? I've managed to lose them while trying to change the name

    Sure, it's strings 2179, 504 and 9565 respectively.

Might want to make a backup of your dialog.tlk before you change it.

You know, you could alway just use NI to change (or remove) the opposition schools as well. Lets say you wanted to trade one opposition school for another. All you would have to do is take all the scrolls in that classes opposition school and remove the flag making them unuseable. Then you take the scrolls from the school you want to be unuseable and you add a new unuseability flag. It's easier than it sounds when you are using NI.

The CLAB files are probably identical, which would be why--spell usability and so on is defined by the kit flag rather than the CLAB file.
