Chapter 2 - Embrace the Shadow? What shadow?

I feel like an idiot, 'cause it looks like I'm about the only person not to get this puzzle.

Basically, I've explored/ransacked the entire Ice Temple and surrounding area. Aside from Zak, Nathaniel, and Nickedemis, there isn't a single living creature left in a mile radius. Unfortunately, there's one hidden door that apparently leads to the altar, and I can't open it. When I try, it says "Embrace the Shadow" is etched upon it. Right, so it's a puzzle, but what's the answer?

Do I have to use the Dais? Or the big lightning gun? Or the Battlesquare? I just need to get to the altar, dammit

 

Yes, you have to use the big lightning gun.

The "Embrace the Shadow" comment refers to how you open the outside door. You initially enter that room via the teleport stair. One door leads out to the main areas. That's the door on the left. The north door has that big shadow over it. If you touch that shadow, you get a lightning attack, but the lefthand door will open.

Once the left hand door is open, you can use the lightning gun to get the shadow door. To do so, fire the lightning gun to the north after making sure that the mirror outside the north doorway to the gun room is tilted to deflect shots to the left.

Once you fire the gun, it should kill the shadow and allow you to open the door.

 

Ahhh...thankee kindly, sir. Since I'm an impatient bastard, I used the Hans() cheat and teleported into the altar room, which made it sort of hard to dodge the tornado. Next time I play through, I'll know how to avoid horrible death at the cyclone's hands
